more mieages

well its approx 700 km to austria to a place called See,the hotel with garage is 34 euros a night bee and bee. (600km as the crow flies).austria to bologna (ducati)around 200 km,austria to rome around 600 kms.
its approx a 2 hour tour in ducatee.
using the rough calcualtion of 80 km to 50 miles, ill let you do the math.
3 days we should be in Rome on me chariot wiv charlton heston.:D

Austria

Thought it was further than that but works out about 475miles (approx) don't sound too bad as long as we have a break for noshing on the way. Got to seeee ducateeee should be interesting, do they do test rides? what sort of roads are we contemplating?. Where are we going, from Calais?. ferry or puff puff?. 400 miles before brekkie and just a poodle along afterwards.

sure you have your miles and kilometers around the right way.

I have no problems doing uk to landeck/see/insbruck in 1 day but i think it's around 700 miles. just so long as the mileage drops after the long slog & from what you are saying on the phone it will.

unless you break the journey before hand & make it 2 days to austria, but that means 1 less day on the italian job.

As i've done 2 european tours with you i'm comming

Another Splugen Fan, within reach of Stelvio, personally I would go from Switzerland - Italy if I did it again (and I hope to one day)

Umbrail is great alternative up to (or down from) Stelvio, we went up Umbrail and Down (better) Western ramp this year, but means I now have to go back to do Eastern Ramp :D

We stayed in livigno which was a lively bustling place and probably packed with campsites (I never use them so don't pay much attention) and from here you can do nice day out around Stelvio / Offen / gavia Passes, and Also get to Splugen / Julier / Albula / Majola, if going again I would go across Albula to Splugen and return via Majola (On GS) for faster (but not fast by UK standards) the Julier is a stunning route of well surfaced quicker corners.

See them all here:

As to wrong side of road, I find it very easy 99.99% of the time, biggest risk is pulling out of garages after re-fueling for me, once I start rolling I am fine, junctions always get you thinking, but I have almost gone wrong side after re-fuel a couple of times.

Have a great time everyone :thumb

re think

day 1 home-dover-calais-strasbourg ish.
day 2 strasbourg-landeck (austria)
day 3 landeck-bologna(ducati visit)
day 4 bologna-rome
day 5 make it up as we go along.
there we are,the trip has been down scaled to involve more beer.
other places on the hit list are pisa, turin, and the pub,and lots of twisties.

Italia

That sounds brilliant, done home to strasburg before but other way round should be fine this is going to be a bloody good run only make sure the weather is sunny. Anyone who's never been to Austria the scenary is brilliant,
look carefully and you could see Julie Andrews in a field!.
Lets get going!!!

What about only going as far south as Bologna then spending a few days touring the hills and coast of northern Italy. It means fewer big mileage days there and back and more time for relaxed riding.

Verdun

Definatly be great opportunity, to see it and pay respects and you can tell us what it was like.

No worries Dave

You can pedal ahead to the hotel and get the beers in.Strasbourg isnt too far away.
My Father served around those shores, and its been a thing i wanted to see for some time whilst flying around over there.
Its a free and easy ride, nobody is chained to ride with the pack.
Any more places you chaps want to see en-route to innsbruck, austria ?

Highly recommended, why not stop here for a night or two:

yer

it could be a nice start to the trip, crack a few beers, light the barbee and voila. Thanks rasher, i'll make some enquiries.
it also means not having to to leave the uk too early as well.
ps do we have any smokers on board?theres one i know of.

righty ho

Crunch time, i'm going to book the hotel for one night in austria, in the vivaldi hotel, price 34 euros b+b pppn based on 2 sharing,(single beds)we need another smoker though.
The hotel gets booked up very quickly.
What i can do is forward your credit card details direct to the vivaldi, or you can do it yourself, its up to you.
This is the hotel for night 2 in austria.
Once i know the numbers i'll try and get a deal on the ferry too.Atb Paul.
If you pm your email addys to me i can email back, its easier for comms.

Sounds a great trip Paul, love to join the team but the dates don't fit in with my holiday allowance...

Will still follow the thread as plans and routes are confirmed!!

:D

As much as I would like to come along and pop my alpine riding cherry, I doubt I will come for several reasons including work and personal life.

The trip sounds great, I hope everyone has a brilliant time. Be sure to take lots of pics for the ride report and make me even more jealous.

Have looked at the mileage and these days seem OK. Don't mind doing long miles each day but also like to have time to chill, have a good meal and a few beers at the end of it!
Just who is definite for this trip then. Could be nice to see who's in? I'm about 85% in - just need to ensure another trip I'm going on doesn't clash dates wise. Should know that by Xmas at least.
