Hi,

After seeing a HP touchscreen PC on QVC yesterday (sorry :comfort) I am thinking about splashing out.

Is anyone using one? If so what model, is it any good and is it worth the money?

Thanks

Nigel

Nigel, I have a Lenovo X61 Thinkpad which has a touch and swivel screen so you can use it as a notepad with hand writing and sketching, seems to work well but tbh I never use this function. You're welcome to have a play if you want when we get together at the end of the month.

I bought a HP tablet notebook about 18 months ago and love it. You can use the keys as you would for a normal notebook, or swivle the screen to make a star trek type tablet. Using a stylus or any other 'device' - finger will do - it's so cool! Saw the sales pitch as you did - looks great, but thought the price was a bit steep. These things will get cheaper as time goes on, but if you want one that bad go for it!

Or as another option get yourself a cheap laptop and get a touch screen panel fitted, they are a panel that fits in front of the lcd, as an example I have a Samsung NC10 and you can get a panel for that for about 50-60 quid delivered, and the shop down the road will fit it for about the same. Cost varies dependent on the size of the screen.

i saw that qvc HP machine too.

must admit i was intrigued, but as the demo went on it all began to look rather clumsy.
maybe in a few years time they'll sort it out properly, but it just seemed a pointless gimmick to me. i don't want a screen covered in finger smears for a start.

I have used / developed for the HP TouchSmart Pc series quite a lot in my old job (both the old shape and the newer one). They are alright, we were using it as a point where customers could leave feedback in our store, which is great because they have a keyboard for typing and a touch screen for the main button areas.

However whenever using it for anything normal, you very rarely use the touch screen itself, you certainly don't mix & match the mouse and touch facilities, and how many functions really shine with the use of touch screen over a normal mouse.

On top of this you are paying a premium because of the name, the touch screen and also remembering as you are interacting with it more regularly the chance of damage would be increased (if only slightly).

Just my 2c

Thanks guys.

After a trip to Currys this morning I am quite liking the iMAC but don't think I can justify the cost.

Thinking of ditching my big tower and getting a small form PC. Possible Dell Studio 19 (without the touchscreen) or a Mesh Cute.

I realise that I would probably not use the touchscreen that much but instead resort to keyboard and mouse. I am really just looking to declutter my desk at home. Will probably wait till Windows 7 is released.

Its not the top of the desk that's the problem its the forest of cables underneath :)

I am on the edge of going to an imac.... everyone that has one I know will NEVER go back to PC.... not matter the cost of a Mac.

Hoping that in June at the WWDC they will bring out something special...

i don't think you'll need to wait until then. strong rumour that a new imac is imminent.

iphone seems to get refreshed in june.

Touchsmart

I was also looking at these as a one box option.

Some good deals on here, HP Renew program and factory refurbished.

My last 2 machines from this site.

HP are offering free Win 7 upgrade with new machines at the moment.
Not sure if refurb machines qualify?

cheers
