A nice read. I don't normally spend much time reading blogs but this one warrants some of my time. 
Great stuff............. I retire at the end of 2010 (early I might say) and intend t do the southern half of the same route in Spring / Summer 2011.

Although I have given up some time ago to update my travel blog I do keep up the hope that one day my writing appetite will return.

Hey, good luck with your early retirement plans… 
This is something everybody should aspire to as there is such as wonderful world out there and such a shame to miss it only because of inertia, anxiety or societal pressure to do what one is “expected to do” that being to work life away in some job
just to pay bills for things that most of the time we don’t really need to be happy or fulfilled.
If I may give a suggestion, don’t exclude from your travel plans the Scandinavian peninsula… I understand that being British you’re not exactly keen to travel in cold, rainy places but take my word for it: the beauty and exhilaration of riding the northern coast of Scandinavia is worth every rain drop you might get to endure…

Mant thanks for the good wishes. I had thought I may do the 'northern half' another year....but you are quite right about the British and weather.
Who knows at some point I ay even pop into Romania.
