My Tourances are coming to the end of their life and need replacing. On my previous R850R I had BT020s, which were great, so wonder whether - at least for the next 6-8 months - should put the BT020s on, and then change back to Tourances for the foul weather? In case you are wondering - I do 12k+ miles per year, ride all year 'round to and from work, mostly countryside/backroads (Gloucestershire/Herefordshire), so mucky roads are a constant feature between October and March/April.

Thanks for your help

Personally, I would take a lot of convincing to trade off the tyre life/grip combination of Tourances for the shorter life of 020s. On the road, the grip is sufficient for me to drag the undercarriage under the right circumstances. When ground clearance is the limiting factor, why would more grip be needed?

Besides which, when you've pissed-off a plastic rocket somewhere, there's no better feeling than watching them look at your tyres in disbelief when they catch you up at the next set of traffic lights!

I assume you mean an "oriental rice burner":D (like that one, found it on a website where someone discussed the relative merrits of BMW R80RTs.

Apart from that, I share your thoughts. I do feel however, that the GS give a bit more vibration than my old R850R (my wife commented on this, too), but then a) she doesn't ride pillion that often (has her own rice burner:D ) and b) the 1150GS engine is just a bit rougher (real life !!!) anyway.

I have had 020's on for a few thousand miles now and although they are very good on both wet and dry roads - I can't say that they are discernibly better than Tourance were. They initially felt stickier, but with long term use, don't think they are any better. Handling is no different and I was as confident on Tourance as on 020.

I now miss the extra ability / confidence that Tourance gave me on the occasional foray onto rougher stuff. (where 020's are completely shite - obviously)

Next change will be back to Tourance or even TKC80.

I've 020's and like them a lot... And when pushing really hard in the dry the feel better than any thing I've had before (scorpions, trailwings and tourance).

I also ride shitty lanes and there good there to... my only grip is if the presures are a touch out it'll throw nasty wiggles when you hit wet banding.

However I'd recomend you buy the cheapest.

I'm going for TKC80's next cause I've heard you must be real hard if you can ride them fast and they look cool and my girlfriend think Charley and Ewan are cool and they had TKC80's.
