Touratech HID main beam replacement fitted

Well unit finally arrived on Wenesday, took a couple of hours fitting it, no major problems - just took my time. Everything needed comes with the kit. No hardwiring, ballast plugs into the main beam connector from the back of the original unit.
Originally contacted Touratech in Germany, they said the unit was not available or legal in UK. Spoke with Nick at T'Tech, he had same feedback but ordered it anyway, neither of us know why Germans didn't want to send it. So if you're interested call T'Tech in Wales. Nick said he'd compared it with the small HID spots T'tech sell and it was better for spread and distance.

Anyway it's bloody good! Light intensity is amazing, just like daylight and importantly the spread and beam pattern is broader than standard, so I can see where I'm going and where the roads going. Still tinkering with the adjuster screws to get the aim spot on but thoroughly satisfied.

I'll be fitting one to a mates bike in a couple of weeks but before I do I'll try to get some side by side pictures to post on here.

I believe the reason HID replacements aren't legal is due to some odd law requiring HID lights to have washers fitted.

Sorry Adam. I think the main reason is that self levelling suspension has to be fitted so the beam doesn't become a danger to others. More of a problem on bikes.

I can understand the self levelling requirement if the HID is on the dip beam, but on main?....not sure I see how that applies?

Anyway Nick tells me he used to be an MOT tester and can see no reason why it would fail....good enough for me.

Cars will usually have the HID on dip as well, as you would if you fitted the kit on both lights. MOT testing doesn't check the lighting type so will probably never pick it up - all they test is aim on a stationary bike. Accelerate hard & your dip beam will dazzle oncoming drivers if it is HID. Not a problem, if all you change is main beam.
