Fitting new panniers to the bike today. :)

Did one - fitted all fine - then needed to go out.

Younger brother says I'll do the other for you. Well generally he's fine methodical and careful so I says OK but make sure it's exactly like the one I've just done.

It fits great - but he's got the pucks upside down and distraught - he's know how much the panniers cost. :blast

So here's the problem. I can either use the pannier with the pucks with the lip at the top and the screw tight pucks at the bottom - but how strong are the lips on the pucks to hold the weight of the load...

OR

I can turn the pucks the right way round and drill another set of holes for the bottom set of pucks. This is because if I fit the lipped pucks to the holes already drilled, the lips have hardly any bit on the panniers rails. But then the bottom of the panniers will then have 5 extra holes per puck which I will need to seal to prevent water coming in but will the extra holes effect the strength of the metal - it's 2mm aluminium plate by the way.

OR

I suppose I could buy another puck kit and use screw tight pucks top and bottom. :(

All suggestions welcome.

Brother & I are now going down the pub and I'm not taking my wallet....:beer:

Just swap 'm.

Apply some Tec7 or similar to the back and they will seal perfectly.
A few extra holes won't harm the strength, don't worry.

Cheers,
Michel.

'Cos they were custom made panniers (not Touratech) that's why!

Ah, custom made. Well thats a totally different kettle of fish that is.

Why didn't you say so at the start. Wow, not your ordinary panniers at all. Cor, custom made eh. Like to your own design.

Jeepers I had never thought about custom made panniers. Ever. No I tell a lie, I remember now that that nice Civil chappie will make paniers to your own design.

I seem recall we have seen an own design example on here quite recently.

Tell me, whats the differance between custom made panniers and the usual stuff that we non custom made people normaly buy ?

I see Pink Gorilla has "learning fast" under his name.... ironic that considering the post above?

I have around £200 still in my pocket compared with say the Touratech set up.:)

Michel, thanks for the assurance.

custom made panniers

Lets see a picture of them, I am just about to part with a woge of money for a set of panniers, so may be able to save a few bob.

Rustic but functional..... or if you are interested but don't like the checker plate you could ask for smooth.

2mm plate might not stop tank shells but much stronger than TT panniers! Mine have hinges but you could always spec for a lock at each end of the pannier lid rather than hinges. PM me if you want details of supplier.

Having looked at the picture of the pannier and read the problems with drilling for the pucks I think I am glad I spent the extra £200.

I just phoned Touratech, panniers delivered next day (unusual for Touratech). One hour later all fitted and working and no problems.

Incidentally, slow speed drop with Touratech and they just acted like rear crash bars. One VERY small dent in a corner that you need to lay on your back to see. Why go heavier?
