Touratech screen extender thingy

Looks a bit odd, but it has to be the single best GS1200ADV mod..if you are 6ft plus.

Suddenly I have my 1200RT back.. in one sense. Quiet and incredibly smooth airflow at 80mph plus.

Top marks for an under rated item, tried and tested in this weeks horrendous conditions in Wales.

Added bonus..no water down collar.

Suddenly the ADV really is the perfect long distance m/way machine..amongst other skills.

I've been looking at the Touratech extender myself. I'm 6 4 and get a lot of buffet on the 12GSA.

How sturdy is the extender, does it flap about a lot?

Just a reminder - if you add the extender, you require the "hard parts" as well. If you go off-road, the additional screen support is also recommended. Don't ask how I know... (one cracked screen later). Everything works fine for the first few 100km's though!

This is what I thought. So I ordered them and was changing them over when I twigged that the Hard Parts are aluminium and the original items are steel.

And being ali, the threads inside are not great. One was so badly machined you couldn't tighten it at all. May have been across an entire production run because an identical set where the same.

Then they - TT- tell us the parts are not necessary.

Perhaps BMW upgraded that part to steel on the 1200ADV in 06.

I'm around 1.76m. The extender does make a difference, especially over stock, but it did not remove the buffeting. It is nice if you do a lot of gravel riding where you can take it off when not required.

After tinkering around and looking and experimenting with options, my current setup is: Cee Baileys +4" higher, +2" wider, TT screen support, Tobinators. The screen is angled quite flat. There is a relatively large gap between the screen & instruments allowing wind in to remove the low pressure "bubble" that caused most of the buffeting. I also have the stock hand guards, but modified them from the vertical to a sloped angle. You'd be amazed at how much turbulence they cause! If you go the Tobinator route, buy their hard parts - better quality and more secure than TT.

If I'm riding in normal (non - strong cross winds), it is dead quiet behind the screen - the damn bugs are often idling in front of my face!

The TT screen extender and stock screen is in storage...

I would also suggest adding a thin lexan reinforcing strip over the front of the screen (stock or other). It just transfers the load from the support bolts to the strip and will reduce the tendency of the screen to develop small cracks around the holes.
