Touring chain

I carry a 1.5metre 12mm link chain and a Squire SS50 padlock when touring, it lives in a pannier beneath my dry bag.

Other riders may scoff or baulk at the thought, but a pal had his Gixxer stolen within 30 seconds of parking it and walking to a seafront cafe in Nice.

No fun getting an Easyjet home in your leathers.

And that's my concern

When touring, I just want a chain to either attach to my frame or even just tie our two bikes together. Just make it that little bit less attractive to try nic.

I have a 19mm Almax with the same Squire SS50CS lock.
it goes into a Ground anchor supplied by Almax in my garage.

It VERY heavy, no chance I would tour with that.
Not sure Almax are still in business tbh, shame they made decent stuff.

I just used 2x Xena disc locks which are alarmed when I travel.
If someone can lift my fully loaded GS into the back of their van.... fuck that, I aint fighting with a silverback 🤣

Clever that, is that their super doofer pin thing?
Standard pins. They weren’t doing the super one when I bought mine. Excellent idea for us on a GS or other bike with a hollow rear axel. I have a longer one that goes through the frame on my KTM.

I got my Squire lock from my local branch of Toolstation for similar money.

I have a 2M Pragmasis chain at home but use a lighter 1.5m chain for touring. As already stated above, as a stout chain its bloody heavy.

If you are touring in a group and yours is the only bike that is chained up, guess who's bike will be easier/more likely to get stolen.

My now very old 1.5m (I think) 10mm square section link chain with Squire SS50 lock coupled with a rather excelled Roadlock on the front wheel, which I’ve carried over from my 1200LC GSA.
The chain is being carried in the official KTM tool tray made of aluminium plate mounted across the top of the official KTM/by GIVI pannier rack.

Will it stop a desperate thief to try and nick my bike, it might just make him walk on by. Should he chooses to accept the challenge, then it is sure will set him back some time, making plenty of nose in the process.

I went for the Hiplok X chain. With a setup for while on the road its always going to be a compromise, weight becomes a factor. Solo, id carry a heavier chain on the pillion seat ( have done that before) but two up thats not and option.
Review of the chain:
Thanks for all the replies.

When touring, I carry a lightweight heavy duty Kryptonite cable or two and use an Abus 35/70 disc lock plus quite a thick magnum cable and lock. Most chains except the most expensive will be varying degrees of hardness steel, all defeated by diamond tipped grinder wheels, so I layer security to make it a PITA to tackle. Would rather carry several thicker cables and decent locks which pack up smaller and lighter than a heavy chain and they're long enough to tether a few bikes together.

This is an interesting vid. It demonstrates why it may not be worth buying a 12mm chain over a decent 10mm chain (like the Hiplock X or Abus KS10 loop chain) because there's only a few seconds difference in resistance to grinder attack but still these are very resistant to crop cutters and you save a fair bit of weight/bulk.

Having just bought a new bike, I think I'll invest in a decent 10mm chain and something like the Litelock X1 or even the Abus Granite Power XS67 which still performs better than a 10mm chain in resisting grinder attack (see Bike social destruction test).

Allmax III chain, just long enough to chain the front wheel to a post, plus squire SS65CS padlock, plus an Abus detecto alarmed disc lock on the back wheel. Overkill? Perhaps but I've never had a bike stolen (yet)

That’s a big heavy chain. Good deterrent but possibly too bulky without a solid topbox or panniers.

I use a 5 link length of Pragmasis 16mm protector chain. With the change in owners I don’t know if they are still available but worth an enquiry.

No good for chaining to posts etc but work great to fasten two bikes together when combined with a U lock or anti pinch pins.
As I inevitably tour with at least one BMW shaft drive bikermate, the Pragmasis 13mm chain through both rear wheel hubs secured by their 'bottle' lock. We only do this when staying in cities. Otherwise, it's the Roadlok. The chain is stored in a wrap around fashion to my rear rack and handles etc. Mrs Woodster has yet to sample the delights of a European tour with me and a change of mind would force a security re-think.

Each to own risk assessment but I remain utterly baffled that some bikermates risk ruining an expensive holiday and experiencing massive extra expense and inconvenience for lack of just that extra bit of deterrence.

Another interesting security option discovered, whilst researching currently available solutions:

This is the Kovix KCL10 alarmed lock and chain. Chain is made from heat treated, hardened hexagonal links. Not Sold Secure rated but not all good security products have been tested. Really interesting that the thieves attempted defeating it with croppers, a blow torch and an angle grinder and not only did it survive the attack, the alarm still worked!

Could be a really neat affordable solution in a 1.5m length

They call it a 'bottle lock'. It's a great bit of kit. No idea if they still do it now they are under new owners. Well worth a phone call.
The Roundlock is available elsewhere. Quick google search gives a number of suppliers including Amazon. It’s called a PJB untouchable disc lock.

PJB untouchable disc lock
Is this the same as the Pragmasis Roundlock? Shame it's two large to fit through anything under 16mm chains. I see they're back in business but their roundlock has doubled in price to around £70
