Hi Guys,
Not sure if this is the correct place to ask, but I need some advice.
I am going to take a few days to tour in N Wales next month, and this will be the first time I have tried it without a permanent base. I normally would hire a cottage or something, but felt like I wanted a bit more freedom.
So the question is, when you do this do you pre book hotels in advance or is it safe to just see what turns up?
I will be going at the end of May

If I'm on my own or part of a small group I never book - something always turns up and it gives you the flexibility to stop when you want or when the weather turns. Nothing worse than having hundreds of miles to ride to pre-booked digs in the pouring rain. Hasn't failed me so far:) YMMV:augie

North Wales isn't that big, surely having a base where you can leave the majority of your luggage makes sense. Everywhere within the area is easily ridable to and back in a day :nenau

OK, just reread your original post... my mind was possibly lead astray by DrAlf's answer. Maybe you want to just turn up and find somewhere to stay for the duration? You will probably have better choice if your pre book, weekends will see lots of walkers out at this time of year, you will get a space somewhere but might have to hunt around for it. If you're going mid-week then you should be able to just turn up.

I have tired to book into the Bikers Retreat, Dolgellau in advance on more than one occasion only to find them fully booked. It's a popular place. Wound up at the Plas Coch Hotel, Bala instead. Not too bad, lively bar and plenty of places in Bala to eat. Room was a bit noisy. Off street parking in their car park around the back.

You must pre book hotels. You are not allowed just to 'turn up'.
Good grief.....if you don't plan everything to the last detail something 'unexpected' could happen, and then where would you be?

As others have said the region is not that big, find a nice hotel (I would thoroughly recommend The Wild Pheasant Hotel, Llangollen

if you speak to Sarah and mention me and that you're on a BMW you may get a discount as they do an excellent deal for our Welsh Weekends over at Boxertrix)

From there there's plenty of good days out to be had :)

Bit late as I assume your on your way, but I look on Premier Inn web site, select nearest town and make sure you click on 'my dates are flexible'. This brings list of local Premier Inns with price grid. Quite a few 'saver rooms' are £29 a night. I then plan route around the cheap ones. Normally has to be Month in advance.
Did this couple of weeks ago down to South Coast for 4 nights away, total cost £102. (some less than £29 before you check my maths).

If you want to slum it some Travelodges go down to £19 a night.
