Touring on TKC80s - a bad idea?

Gentlemen, a quick question....

2002 Adv with Tourances currently fitted. Would like to fit TKC80s but I'm concerned how they'll perform 2 up with a full load in the panniers.

I don't need to consider the more "extreme" handling criteria of peg scraping and 80+ mph speeds.

Any thoughts or experience gratefully received.

Depends on how far your planning to go & whether you want to ride off road. TKC's won't last that long doing big motorway milage loaded up, around 5000mls. If your going somewhere hot then Tourances will be fine for gravel tracks and stuff and much better for mountain hairpins and wet tarmac

Tried my R100GS/PD 2 up with TKC's on last weekend...because i was doing a fair bit of off roading...Off road they were great ...On the road they were just about ok at best...The wear rate was high too I recon i took at least 3 mm off the rear in less than 400 miles and it was half worn when i started so it had gone through the first rapid wear stage ...I for one will certainly be sticking to something a bit less agressive for 2 up work in future and if your not going off road i would not use them at all

It will be Scotland, specifically from Ullapool around the North coast in about 2 weeks time. I have pleasent memorys of the amount of wet stuff that falls out of the sky and seen as we'll be wild camping I'd rather not get stuck!

Total mileage is going to be around the 1500 mark, I'm just concerned how the TKC's will get on under that sort of load. I've used them one up, no luggage and been impressed, just wondered if performance degraded significantly with increased load, more than other tyres.

Scotland + rain + offroad = TKC's for deinite IMHO, two up with luggage or not....

Two up (not small people either ) with full luggage and a week's kit on board no problem.....we wet to Achill the other week like that and it was fine, even though it rained hard and it's peak 'making piles of gravel in the road' season over there.

Yes they do wear faster than Tourences, but they're cheaper as well, so it evens out.

No hesitation here...the TKC's stay on

Just my 0.02 cts here, but if your TKC's are new and the trip is less than 5K miles you should be fine. I did a trip to Colorado and brought TKC's with me which I put on at the campground I was staying at. I rode 1K miles off-road and than rode back through some very hot weather (120 F in Texas) to Florida. The rear tire has maybe 500 miles of life left but the front another 1500 miles. Total miles on both is 5K.
As long as you don't try to be Rossi on your bike it ought to work out.

I agree Bill, and some of the best riding of the weekend was only made possible by have TKCs fitted.
Without them would have been like a teenager on a date with no condoms

TKC's all the time. I run from UK to Eastern Europe 3 or 4 times a year fully loaded and often 2 up when in Romania/Serbia. No probs what so ever and gives me the freedom to explore the unsurfaced roads whatever the weather and also to get up into the mountains on the tracks.
Never had a problem with wear, usualy get 5500 miles a set easy and that includes over 2000 miles of motorway each trip, and as anyone who knows me will tell you I don't hang about on the twisty or rough stuff either. No other choice for a GS as far as I'm concerned.
If you want to use road rubber why not get a road bike

Ive done shed loads of miles two up loaded with
luggage in all weathers on all surfaces and never had any trouble with
them ever. I even cought up with some sports bikes in wales fully loaded with
them on. Wish id got them on my 1200gsa instead of these anakee
things
