Hi All.

I newish to the forum. I joined six months ago when I took delivery of my new R1200GSA. Sad to report that it has now been stolen!!

Good news is that my insurers are going to replace it. To stop the horse bolting again I am upping my security big time. I'm thinking of fitting a tracker unit.

Does anyone have any experience of these? Are they worth having? Any recommendations of systems available? Has anyone had to rely on one and was your bike found?

Any help/advice you have would be gratefully received!

Thanks

Adam.

Biketrac, great unit, maybe not the cheapest.

Just look on facebook and see how many they recover. Its SMS based, and means you can track the bike yourself in a browser. You can set it to be either movement based or geolocation based (so if it moves outside of a certain area).

Cost about £300 + installation, then about £80 per year subs.

RBW.

*edited* shite news about the GSA, some cretins about.

Subs are:-
1 year: £99.99
2 years: £179.99
3 years: £229.99

I have an Oxford Tracker in mine, iPhone interface from Dantracker (they make them and rebadge to Oxford)
geofence, and a few other goodies. Get an email if it goes 300m from my house, and then either I or they can track I love or every 5mins.
I pay 70 per year on repeat subscription and that gives hardware cover and a replacement unit when battery expires ( totally sealed and waterproof unit.)

Do you want to track & report/recover the bike yourself or do you want the police to track & recover ?.

Thanks all for your thoughts so far. Roadrider, I'd rather the police track and recover, but the research that I've done so far suggests that the police rarely have the necessary kit to track a stolen vehicle. If that is the case, I'd like the best of both world, being the chance for the police to track and recover, but in the event that they don't, be able to track myself and then report to the police and pester them!

Hopefully you have a suggestion on this ideal!

Thanks,

Is Smartwater any better than Datatag? My stolen bike was Datatagged but I've assumed that the system will only work if the bike falls into honest hands?

I would PM you but so far cannot work out how to! Any hints and tips?

Like Datatag SW is initially a deterrant. It cant be seen with the naked eye and most police carry and use the torch that shows the SW. I would imagine that.it would not have prevented this theft it the Datatag did not. SW can claim a 100% success rate for prosecutions once property has been recovered.

You can only pm if you subscribe to this forum. I think it is £12 per annum. I have found it worthwhile as it opens up some options such as the For Sale which is pretty good.
