Trading up.....................

Don't people save up and buy without debt anymore?

Depends on how long it would take to save up and whether you need one now or not - it's my only form of transport and gets used 7 days a week. Of course I could have taken public transport every day for the next 4 years (costing the same price as the bike would be to finance) and then save an additional £400 each month but for me it just didn't stack up :)

Could you not have bought a cheaper bike to commute on rather than a new one? I've never bought anything on finance and have in the past commuted by bike as an only form of transport.

Yes, I could have bought a CBF 125 and run it into the ground. You don't buy a BMW without wanting some bit of luxury and all bikes are a vanity purchase to a degree or we'd be on Innova 125's and NC750s wouldn't we?
Beemerman59 asked why people finance a particular purchase. Fact is, if you want a new R1200GS then it's (about) £14K. ;)

Which keeps certain parts of the 'Economy' moving...

We all have a choice :rob

True, in today's culture we all can choose to buy before we can afford. And yes, for the people selling that's great but there's always a loser somewhere in the mix.

Thanks for responses. I now realise I was terribly wrong to go down the route of daring not to buy something with the cash currently residing in my bank account. I am suitably reprimanded.

I think the discussion had broadened out somewhat...

Sometimes its harder to just pay outright these days, bigger discounts / incentives are given if you use their finance or PCP deals.
I'm in the market for a brand new GSA, full luggage & navigator 5, once I've told the dealer I would pay with my debit card the discount offered works out at about 3.5% !!! there used to be a time when cash was king and if you paid cash you'd get a good deal, seems now no-one wants money anymore and finance is the new ruler

Not just you.

Bought an HD Fatboy in the Spring for just under £16,000 with a few extras.

Offered £13,500 last week trading in against a Softail Slim.

Only done 2,000 miles.

Keeping the Fatboy thanks and doing a Stage 1 upgrade.

Tried to buy Jo a new car yesterday from a main dealer.

They were offering 1k toward the finance deposit but wouldn't give us a 1k discount for paying for it.

No one is interested in cash anymore.

We didn't buy in the end.

Steve

What did you expect? Your money back? The dealers are there to make money and then supply a service. Someone has to pay for that and that's the customer.

Just take your example, the dealer has to service it, put a warranty on it, stock it maybe for a few months etc etc and then try and make a profit on the sale. As you say a new one is only 16k, this isn't giving him much of a margin to play with when he has given you 13.5k for yours.

It's far too easy to slag dealers off as most of them are decent folk trying to make a living and give good service but of course no one wants to pay for this.

If you buy a bike/car/caravan/truck and sell it within the 1st 12 months you will get hit hard with depreciation. It's not hot news new so get over it or keep your machine for a decent length of time of buy a late second hand bike that someone else has taken the hit with.

Not slagging off at all.

Just agreeing with previous posters.

Maybe keeping it a bit longer lessens the pain. Bought an ex demo Slim back in 2012 for £13.5k did about 8K on it and got £11.5k for it a few months ago against a new LC.
