I'm needing new tyres on my 12 GSA and having read through the threads on here had pretty much made up my mind to go for Trail Attacks.
I'm told, however, that they have been superceded by Trail Attack 2's which don't seem to get such good reviews.

So my dilemna, again based on the threads on here, appears to be Trail Attack 2, Tourance, or Tourance Next.

I don't do a lot of miles, maybe 7,000 miles a year and this will include 1 holiday of at least 4,000 miles.
I'm no riding God by any means but do like to have confidence in the tyres. I had a set of BT021's on my RT and they always felt like they were going to tip in, which was horrible. I've read on here this can be a problem for some with TA2s.

I hope to do some green landing (though this will be a new experience for me) so something that will cope with that would be best.

Price wise there's only £15 between TA2s, Tourance and Tourance Next so this isn't a consideration on this occasion.

I appreciate there will be abuse for posting another tyre question, farley-do's, but I have used the search button and can't see anything that answers my specific questions.

Thanx in advance for any constructive replies.

AS much as I loved my Trail attacks, I took a set of Next's quite happy with them so far, they are better in the wet.. the TA's were wearing unevenly on the rear.
But one should not complain, i got 10K out of them.. see how the Next's fair. I had Battle Wings previously and have to admit I know why they called them deathwings.

I have just put a set of trail attack tyres on and they seem fine so far but only have a few hundred miles on them. They replaced tourance of which I had several sets. Found them to be good and they worked OK on unpaved dry dirt roads. They always wore in an odd way which is why I thought I would try the TA's. Have to say purely by the looks and tread the tourance will be better off road but even then if it got muddy they weren't much cope. Depending on what you class as green lane you might be better looking for something a bit more off road.

I'll have a front Trail Attack for the trip Bill solely because they are only £66 delivered from Oponeo:thumb2 I've got a new Heidenau K76 in the garage which I will put on the back otherwise I would have got a TA to match. I've had the TA's before and they a good reliable tyre but what do I know because I think Battlewings are excellent:D.

All these types of tyre are as good as useless off road despite what everyone says and you need to the Heidenau K60 or TKC's will do the job but on the trip, it's all good tarmac so anything will be good.

trail atacks were great, got me 12000m each on 3 sets. I think i ride like pussy...or so the spirited ride showed!
Just switched to TA2. they track a white line, crack in road a lot. TA's didnt. I prefer the TA to the TA2 but they do grip well. I'll be changing next time. No issues with grip though

I ve had them all,

Dunlop TR91's are the tyre of choice for me.

+1:thumb Excellent on tarmac wet or dry. Ok on loose dry gravelly type tracks. If your serious about green laning fit TKC's, or better still buy a proper trail bike that's lighter, easier to control and wont cost much to repair when you drop it.

Another vote for TR91 - To me, they are brilliant on all types of road use. Almost certainly not knobbly enough for any sort of off-road use though (but I was happy with them two-up on Welsh forest roads).

My GSA had TAs from new. They were on a par with the TR91s *until* they were about 50% worn - at which point they started squirming badly on white lines, overbanding etc and generally feeling "disconnected". While the actual grip etc was probably still good, they knocked my confidence for six and left me wobbling my way around the twisties like a novice, especially in the wet.

Cheers Chris and thanx all.

I was looking for a bit of an all rounder rather than trail specific but I take your point.

Hopefully next year I'll be in a position to start looking for a nice cheap little 2 stroker specifically for off-roading.

Another for the TR91s. Got my new GSA TC in September which had Tourance EXPs....absolute shite. Wore quickly and unevenly. I had TR91s on my previous GS and of all the tyres I have used my favourites.

Having said that...all of these so called adventure tyres are really no good off road as others have Said. Therefore many go for a straight road tyre.

They do feel different Oldnfat, I fitted a front NXT to my twin cam and it has more grip and makes the steering slower and harder to bank. It`s a bit like fitting a steering damper and took a while to get used to. I am sure it is a firmer tyre to cope with the increase in BHP in the new water cooled bike. The pressure should also be increased.I posted on here about the odd feel and got a lot of feed back.

Mine is 99% on road has a Maxxis SuperMax on the back and Maxxis Detour (trail style) on the front. They are reasonable cost, good tread life and I have no grip worries even when fully loaded with weight equal to a small pillion. But neither of them will do off road on mud. The trail moniker is all style and no substance. If you want proper offroad fit TKCs and put up with the on road side effects.

I have used Tourances, Road Attacks, Trail Attacks, Anakees. What would I buy next? Whatever is the best deal, I don't think there any bad tyres these days.

I've been using TA's for a few years now and have been delighted with grip in wet/dry, wear rate & performance (80:20 road/off road)

However, the next set will be more road biased...PR3's or anakee 3's.......as I have the little orange toy for off road silliness.....

Well I just did my first dirt track on the TA's. I have done it many many times on the original version tourance tyres without a problem. On the TA's thought it felt like the front end was all over the place. Wouldn't say they were dangerous just very skittish on the front. Maybe they still need to settle in from being new. On today's experience though I definitely wouldn't recommend them for anything other than paved roads. They are good on that though and it pissed with rain on the way home and they still felt good.
