Thinking of coming over to Dublin for a few days and just starting to look if there are any legal trails to ride around the area, or within 2-3 hours of the ferry terminal.
Will be riding a Yamaha Tenere or X Challenge so nothing too serious, just nice easy trails.
Any advise on areas, maps, trails etc appreciated.

Unlike England we don't have 'green lanes' & are therefore restricted in the places we can ride off road. Most of the stuff here is on forestry tracks but they're owned by the State forestry company and are therefore illegal to ride on. As a group of conscientious motorcyclists we couldn't possibly condone such riding although there are some people that will chance it :augie

A lot of the forestry around the Dublin & Wicklow mountains is defo out of bounds as it's crawling with walkers who, although not as militant as the English lot, they're certainly not backward in causing trouble. In addition much of the unforested highland areas of Wicklow are now designated as being of special interest & all landowners have been told not to allow access to motorcycles & quads. Similarly, the Slieve Bloom area is an 'environmental park' and the rangers have taken court cases against bikers.

There are some 'right of way' tracks around the country but they're few & far between and you certainly couldn't make a proper run out of them without having long periods of tarmac in between.

The off road runs on our spring & summer events are always organised by locals who know the local forester & adjoining landlords and can get permission to ride across enough ground to make a day of it. If you came over for the Tipp event you'd get a full day off road with the possibility that afterwards someone would bring you to their 'back yard' ;)

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Jockser, I think I will try and arrange to come over when one of the events are on and follow the locals around their patch for off road.
I am still planning on coming over to Dublin before the end of the year, will make it a tarmac based trip.

thanks again for your advise.

trail riding in the west

unlike the east of ireland, over here in the west we have lots of legel green lanes
and un tarred roads and a total lack of population. altho you will need a local guide as they are not documented any where that i know of. and there is more opening every year as people are moving back into the bogs to cut turf . its meby 100 miles from the ferry port. :aidan
