Things to see

Haitabu - Open Air Viking Museum

Castle Gottorf that houses the schleswig Holstein museum, it pretty good has the germanica 3,000 year old long ship, some dead blokes head from Roman times and a globe... and hold art installs

bit further up the road, castle gluecksburg,

I might be able to get a brewery tour organised for the northern most and still privately owner brewery in Germany

the spring and winter brock beers.... my god they just do some exceptional damage

the gold is a lovely light easy beer for the summer.... and the strand (beach) beer.... is also very morish

Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 21.16.45.jpg

Laboe U-Boat and naval memorial

but the stone where Harold Blutooth was confirmed into christianity is in Schleswig Holstein (not danemark that's the jelling stone)

the poppen stein (pope stone) as mentioned in his official records, the site of Harold Blutooth Becoming a christian then going on to unite the Viking tribes....

the jelling stone isn't that away... but in Danemark

and if your going there, then that's a really another trip as the tivoli gardens are lovely and the hippy part of danemark is something else which does have a motorcycle connection

nearby in Schleswig Holstein are the Danewerk fortifications, it's the oldest fortification of it's kind known as the Valdmar Wall.... fought over for over 1,000 years

day trip Husum for (fish brot) fish bread.... a local staple meal.... and look at Thoedore Storms House (well small) but there's a pub nearby....

bit of information

big sky to the light house at Westerhever, be prepared for seeing loads of nothing.....

Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 20.48.35.jpg

Idstedter Raeuber hoehle (neolithic thing, was later used by the Idstedter robbers to hide their stash)

the robbers hide out.... there between robbing and stuff....

go on the viking boat.... kin cool.... need to check the diary of the sailings

Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 20.57.29.jpg

Viking Festival usually first weekend of August

www.wikingertage.de

which was very easy going, ended in abit of a haze cos I might have become overwhelmed by booze.... and BBQ stuff...

or have lunch here

or here

or other places cos they all do food..... like Cafe Hansen in Friedrichstadt for Flammenkuchen (flame bake, sort of german version of pizza) which is rather good....

Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 21.22.03.jpg

and have a trip out to Friedrichstadt which is just odd and not at all what you would expect to find

Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 13.58.04.jpg

cos it looks like little holland

We'll also have our canoes there as we're going to run, the first Viking Adventure.... so while I might be busy for abit if you need to have a go on canoe that also an option...

Schleswig Holstein is very quiet, there's loads of nothing which will take ages to see....

there's also a schwebe bahn with a cafe nearby and you can just watch the world float past.

Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 21.26.19.jpg

I'll also check when Kieler Woche is, there's usually a good display of tall ships... and you know yo-ho-ho sailing and other stuff.... like booze and fireworks

ther's also the Holsteiner Alps.... it;s a small area near Ploen... rather nice wriggly roads, loads of bikers buzz about there... kinda dangerous...

not so sure about that area, I've been through it... didn't really stop the castle is next to the very germanly named "great ploen lake"... as it's big and next to ploen... ther's sight seeing boats there...

Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 21.44.22.jpg

so if this is of interest drop a comment below and I'll start to talk with the different people get this more defined.

I will be busy running a eco challenge event, but that should sort itself out once I've pushed the button on it....

Well well....

I could not find 3 weeks of leave (whilst remaining gainfully employed and married) but if you'd welcome people for phases of that, it sounds tremendous.

I'd deffo want to do the viking museum, the brewery, the tallship, the viking boat, the pizza, all that beer and of course I could not miss the canoeing...:D

I'll follow the thread with interest. (y)

P

you could make your time slot, fit within the 3 weeks we're there...

if that makes sense..?

we're also having people fly in for the canoe trip

this is the rough, route, it's 50Km along the schlei form the baltic sea (into northern germany's longest fjord) then to schleswig a nice walk from the harbour with the canoe on a trolly.... about 15-20km into the river .... to Hollingstedt into the Treene (river) then follow that down for another 60Km into the canal system and finish in the town square for a medicinal lager....

Haitabu Museum Is an open air thing, there's viking houses, and stuff with people doing viking stuff.... (note no killing, rapaing and stealing stuff...)

there's a museum that drills deeper into Viking trading at Haitabu, which was by far the largest settlement of it's kind approx 30,000 people with goods being traded from china, to africa, europe to asia and bits of the northern US...

They've been digging this place up and doing research for over 60 years, but there wasn't the access to Russia so alot of this history was hidden or not properly explained.

it's a 3 hour walk about, with a 10-20 min walk from the carpark, there's a cafe which sells ice-cream and cake and has clean facilities for the chaps that need a sit down wee...

Haitabu Opening times

Land Museum Castle Gottorf, home of the Nydam boat (viking ship) and other old stuff, it's an old military barrack and castle a good walk about is 3-4 hours... there's a walk in globe from the olden days... didn't see the cafe... loads of castle stuff... armour, old shit guns, old paintings, statutes, and carving... there's usually specific art installs which are interesting, there might be language guided tours... didn't see this... did not need a wee ...
Screenshot 2026-08-03 at 19.08.27.jpg

Castle Guecksburg Flensburg

open all the time also a long walk about, cafe down stairs... which does pickled pork (sauer fleisch) regional speciality

Screenshot 2026-08-03 at 19.22.56.jpg

Flensburg brewery... is a more complex thing I need to book that so need 4 weeks notice will deal nearer the time...

but as it's the local brewery... they sell it everywhere and you can effectively tour the whole trip into a brewery tour....

Husum has a festival otherwise it's just a little harbour seaside town, with loads of cafes the festival is all over the town with multiple stages doing different music, food and stuff.... if the weather is nice it's a bimble of 4 hours minimum... parking is abit of a faff it's near the train station and then walk into town.

Screenshot 2026-08-03 at 19.32.27.jpg

U-Boat and Laboe memorial well sign posted, carpark by cafe... which clean WC, near beach walk down there and mooch to the top of the memorial.... museum, which has on display a (nazi flag under special license) along with all the other flags ever used.... this is ultra rare....!

Screenshot 2026-08-03 at 19.37.31.jpg

There's also a museum in Flensburg which has on display the Dornitz sceptre think.... also very rare... can't recall what that place is called...

historical importance, as the end of world war 2, was abit more complex as they thought they could just carry on....

Geltinger bay (regional area) is the location of several U-boats that got scuttled.... kinda wild nothing there apart from stuff that's to be discovered....

sailings on the sigyn (Viking ship) the tour takes about 2-3 hours not yet published for Juiy... usually week days they start in the main part of the town. But these tours end in early August

Wikinger Festival (Viking Festival) first weekend in August... it's a good wander about very much for people watching, I would say it's good for Cosplay types that like to dress as vikings, cos they get properly involved....

it's a ticket only event, and everything costs money.... even to go for a wee.... pace yourself on the meade.... being hammered does make it much funnier...

Kieler Woche is the end of June.... OOOPS.....! that might need to be a separate trip

Screenshot 2026-08-03 at 19.56.01.jpg

Friedrichstadt
Also has a festival on their canals... with a procession of small ships... 24-27 july
they also do dragon boat racing on bigger bit of the river, need to check the dates it's like henley reggatta... with music and stuff...

if your a closet head banger... there's also Wacken Festival

Usually the last weekend in July going into August
Screenshot 2026-08-03 at 20.04.18.jpg

shops and stuff have normal opening hours

my viking canoe adventure is based on the historical trips vikings would make from the baltic to the north sea to come and visit the UK for a clubbing party....

there's a website this is a gig I'm working on, it's similar in structure to the Devizes to Westminster. We're doing a sighting lap... I'll post a video and link to that website

it's a personal eco challenge broken down into stages it's organised by folks, I'm working for and that's my job and reason why I'm there... it's another fee paying gig and I'll post that set of details once I have them all.

the best bet would be a 7-10 day trip and them pop into whichever thing takes your fancy... ending with the viking festival sober up and home.

if you need more details let me know will break down the list of campsite we're at and when.
