Eh? Why would you want something translating, if once translated it didn't replicate what had initially been said?

Because it can lack context. I've read Japanese tech manuals which "Dismantle" and "remantle".

Therein lies the skill of a Technical translator.

My daughter is 'near native' speaker in several languages, she is not particularly IT aware but when I asked her about auto translation she doubted its suitability / accuracy for formal docs, citing probs with context etc. I know she has friends who are 'on the books' with companies who specialise in undertaking translation work ~ why would such companies exist if auto translate didn't have short comings? Presumably you could let an auto translate pkge do the bulk of the work and then you could just kinda proof read / correct afterwards.

Your daughter's about right. You'd get it professionally done for formal and legal. What I need is there or thereabouts. I can tidy it up. Even google translate is far better than it used to be but I just need to do a 20 page document quickly to save time and at a standard I can share with other anglophones.

I’ve done a fair bit of translation for work and a bit of freelance too

Translating word for word generally doesn’t work well, there are grammatical differences to deal with, local formulations or lexical chunks, and as already mentioned, context is everything

You have to understand whole sentences or paragraphs then translate the idea or concept whilst retaining the original meaning as closely as possible

And it’s time consuming !

I used to live in Holland and I spoke German and Dutch, both of which have different dialects. Same with Spanish and their vast array of different dialects.
