Quite a loud clunk taking up drive at low speed in first gear. As if there are no cush drive rubbers or shock absorbers in the drive system. Is this normal ?

Check out this post.

Yes the clunk is normal, yes there is an equivalent of a cush drive.

The demonstrator I tried before I bought mine did not have the transmission clunk, as described, but my bike does. In two trips to my dealer they've replaced the gearbox, then the final drive (excessive play) and driveshaft. It still clunks though not quite as badly. New gearbox has a noticably lighter action though. Not sure what to do next, 'cos it's still nagging me. It's either something else - I can only think of the clutch, or one of the new components has the same feature. Or the demonstrator was a rare exception.

suarvharv: Thought that the clunk was a characteristic of the drive system, didn't know it was a fault. Sounds as though I should take it back to the dealers before my warrenty has run out and get a new gearbox, clutch and final on the back of it:D

I suppose I'm saying it's not necessarily a fault. I just haven't figured it out yet. Will probably go back to my dealer, who have been very good, and try their demonstrator again and have a talk about it.
