Nearing the end of a little spin the other day the bike started generating some unusual transmission noise. When moving off in first gear there was the sound of gears not properly meshing together and then a couple of momentary lurches as if drive was disengaged, changing up into 2nd and above everything was fine. Then when stopped I put the bike into neutral and when I let out the clutch(in neutral) the same sound of meshing gears started until I pulled in the clutch again.
I'm hoping these symptons are not too serious. Can anyone assist please?

If you pull in clutch does it quieten?

Is it still the same now

If you drain gear oil is there silver or brass flecks in it?

I think you should not ride it any further, if it were mine it would be gearbox out and stripped, if there are noises from transmissions there is usually an internal problem. If you haven't got a gearbox fixer in Ireland send it to Mikeyboy.

Drop oil NOW

Do NOT "test ride"

If the oil has sparkles in it or looks horrible and sludgy or very bronzy

Get the box out

Only thing I am thinking I'd maybe water down speedo cable and it lying for such a long time perhaps a bearing breaking up

Good advice above - investigate NOW not ride further. It is also possible that the problem coould be gearbox input splines statrting to strip..........

You're not far from a guy in Wexford who looks after the ol airheads. I'll pm you his name and number.
