Hi all, a quick chip question, does the chip go where the blank fits, fella in bike shop said I need a new key as well as chip for £70,I don’t know if that’s good bad or indeferent

BM dealer used to be able to do it cheaper than 70 - three day turn around proof of ownership - the dealer then asks and they get it cut and code a new key by whomever BM UK use to do the job
the chip is in the black bit - its not meant to fall apart

EWS – Electronic Immobilizer on CAN-based BMW motorcycles
What does "EWS" stand for?
It is German for "Elektronische Wegfahr Sperre"
The most common symptom:
The motorcycle does not start and the “EWS” is intermittently or permanently displayed on the instrument cluster (KOMBI)
The problem
Since the systems inception in 2004, it has been plagued by various problems, the biggest by far being the (un)reliability of the Ring Antenna and Evaluation electronics. This of course is a single point of...
found this on another forum
2008 R1200GS would not start. The display showed the error message "EWS" - which relates to the ignition anti theft system. I then tried the spare key (and the plastic key) and the engine started with either of them. I took the faulty key to the local BMW dealer and they said the chip in the key could not be programmed - it must be faulty.
Looking on line this is apparently a rare event. It concerns me is that this could happen when I am a long way from home with no way of starting the bike.
Thanks for the info botus,I have two keys, both look like the YouTube video expect one is a rubberish top and works, the other is exactly the same as the video but with no chip,if I get a chip is there anyway round programming it with using a gadget they use in a locksmith shop
As I need two keys I know I’ll have to give in and pay to get it done correctly, but I like buggering about to start with, and it might be worth a shot
Thanks again
not tried to link up - is it not covered in the text long thread I added above... its normally a user option on most vehicles but they like to pretend you can't to make money at the workshop
of course if the chip is really nasty sometimes you need to delete all keys add them together in one session (which is somewhat risky).
did you flip back to the start of the video - it suggests the cheap plastic tag you sometimes get on the spare key has a chip hidden in there...
I'd go see local dealership parts and get the grown ups to do it correctly - done it twice - works beautifully and I paid a lot less than 70
The transponder is usually a small glass tube bout the size of a grain of rice thereabouts, they normally sit in the moulded part of the key, as opposed to the blank itself, if your not worried about asthetics, you can get a blank un chipped key cut and tape the transponder part to the new key, making a fat key so to speak
And finally, do they definitely need the bike to sort out the transponder, even if they have two ignition keys, one with and one without a transponder
Cheers for all your replies

you confused me - if it works like cars, below should be about right
BM somehow know and set the key to just work when you get it
Timpson just fake a copy of the same key you gave them to cut - so the bike doesn't know you are using a different key - which if keen is not so clever, one day when you lose a key it can't be wiped - so anyone that finds it gets a free bike
Normally you set the vehicle in a learning mode and show it the new key and it adds it in a list of usually 8 keys it can have linked up at any one time
and if you don't upset it, all the other keys stay listed
Cheers botus, the reason I ask is because there’s three Master Locksmith’s one needs the bike and keys the other just needs the keys, none of which are Timpsons
