Travel insurance, check yours

Update today.
Directline have yet again confirmed absolutely that I am covered for a 1200cc motorcycle and for touring on it. They say again (and have confirmed with the Underwriters) that the standard policy (I have world cover) covers this activity by default, provided the rider has full UK licence and wears a helmet. The additional entry (< 125cc) on the certificate is spurious and a throw back to when you had to specify motorcycling separately. They now have 4 telephone conversations recorded in evidence (I've noted name, date and time), but cannot send me written confirmation :blast.

I'd still be changing insurer to one that provides irrefutable evidence in the policy documentation that there is cover for all my risks. It's not like it's hard to find a competent underwriter at a reasonable price.

Thats because you are talking to monkeys

Suggest you write in to either Tom Woolgrove who is Managing Director (Personal Lines Insurance) or Paul Geddes, Chief Executive of RBS Insurance. Directline is part of RBS Insurance (which in turn is part of RBS group PLC - that famous state owned bank). Their HQ is below:

RBS Insurance
Churchill Court
Westmoreland Road
Bromley Kent BR1 1DP

Failing that, you could always try Stephen Hester, Chief Executive of RBS group at their in Scotland HQ.

Let us know how you get on.

So, what are you going to do now?

Stay with the insurer?

Move to a different insurer? As Wessie says, there are lots of very good alternatives available out there.

Take it higher up the Monkey Puzzle tree?

Not go on your holiday?

Just renewed, so I guess I'll stay for this year (and yes, I'll still take my ride to Gibraltar & Jerez). I'm taking the initiative and writing to them confirming the conversations (quoting date/time/statements from them etc).
Not very happy though

Surely the whole content of this thread would suggest otherwise.

No, this thread shows that there are a lot of people who seem incapable of reading and understanding insurance policies before they commit to the purchase. There is no shortage of underwriters willing to cover motorcycle touring.

People also fail to check if their underwriter has changed T&Cs before renewing a policy. I have an annual policy via my bank, included in the Premier a/c package. The bank, previously Alliance & Leicester, now Santander, switched the policy from Fortis UK to Ageas (same company really as Fortis was taken over). With the reissued policy the T&Cs changed in my favour, as Fortis had the 125cc threshold. The policy renews every February and I make a point of reading the new documentation. If it wasn't for this useful freebie I would've ditched Santander ages ago.

Result :clap
Just had a Directline supervisor on the phone. They will write to me confirming I'm covered (specific, not generic letter).

This thread is a timely reminder to get my EHIC sorted.
Here's the NHS webpage...https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do
Be aware;although the EHIC is issued without charge, there are companies out there who will take your money to do what you can do easily on the NHS website.
Bon Voyage.

Biker travel insurance. The majority of Bike Tour sites recommend GoldCover Insurance.

Two I have seen in the past are Yorkshire Based White Rose and also MCi.
The Mapsman site also is touting it now.http://www.mapsman.com/store/product.php?id=759

Have used them on last couple of trips. They cover for most pre existing medical conditions also . Also breakdown recovery with Greenflag. Breakdown on costs on MCi website.

Any updates on this thread.

Just spent an evening looking for combined travel and vehicle recovery for my 11 year old bike for three days in Europe.

Best quote I can find is from europ assistance at £34.

Anything to watch for with this company?

I have an annual multi trip worldwide travel policy with Ageas (2nd year now) I wrote to them asking for confirmation that I would be covered whilst touring on my bike, which they did. It cost £150 for both my wife and I.

There are no concerns about Europ Assist. They are a long established outfit with an extensive network across Europe. I have gad cover with them a number of times over the years but never used it fortunately. Others less fortunate have been satisfied with their service as far as I know.
