Who do you use?:nenau

Have a policy with Allianz, it's due for renewal, I rang to ask a few questions and the answers were kinda vague like, 'you should be covered' and 'it'll Probably be less than the amount you're covered for':blast

The medical expenses cover is for €2.5 million but repatriation only covers €4k. I asked if that would cover any of us to be flown home in a medical/ambulance helicopter and was told 'it should be enough'

Does anyone know if it's likely that €4k would cover me if I had to be airlifted from everywhere foreign?! Have worldwide cover.

Or has anyone got better insurance??
Any other questions I should be asking??

Cheers guys:thumb

Hi Mide,

Send Luke Scott a message, he is an insurance broker.

4K seems a bit small for repatriation to me.

Mide, the thing to be careful of is that most 'standard' travel insurance doesn't cover you if you're riding a bike over 125cc (with most companies, although some state 250cc)
I used to do mine one trip at a time (sweet jaysus :D) with (I think) GetCover but in the end it was easier & cheaper to do it for a full year with Auntie Carole ;)

Hey Mide... I used VHI multitrip before..
and like jockser said you have to be careful cause of the 125cc limit with all policies..

but 4k repatriation????? that wouldnt even get you home from the UK.

here is a link from the Department of Foreign affairs, stating Air Ambulance home from spain can cost upwards from €20,000

Update

Warning - checked your policy details

becoming an OAP has significant disadvantages. As an example, my VHI multitrip travel insurance tripled in price. I did a trawl for another insurer that would cover me for biking trips but a couple of quotes persuaded me to look again at the VHI offer.
Before I committed, I had a look at the policy details. These are not easy to find and it would appear that they change almost monthly. To my great surprise, I discovered that I'm not covered for a bike over 50cc. So VHI won't be getting my business.
Insure and Go are also a no go with a gouging extra charge for each biking trip - no multitrip biking cover. Multitrip do cover you under extras.
The AA have a policy underwritten by AXA which in the exclusions states "Your engagement in or practice of: .... the use of motorised two or three wheeled vehicles unless an applicable current Republic of Ireland driving licence is held permitting the use of such vehicles in Ireland and the country visited and a crash helmet is worn". So while it isn't explicit, it would appear that you aren't excluded.

I gave up as I have no immediate travel plans.

My advise is to check your travel insurance to ensure that you are covered.

A.A. :thumb2
When i did the Gambia trip, i phoned the A.A. - explained it all in detail, confirmed the itinerary (sp?) in writing- including going through Mauritania, included my medical condition.
No problem - even got a nice eMail back wishing me luck!
cost about €100 for a months cover.
Had i been on a Bike over 125c.c. i was told that would not be a problem either.

According to the nice lady at the AA just now they'll cover you while riding a motorcycle of any capacity once you have a full license & are wearing protective clothing & helmet. A steal at €46 for the year.
Thanks nud1e & Og :thumb

That's quiet interesting, as I trawled the insurers last year and it was nigh on impossible to get cover for anything over 125cc. Is this cover available to view in writing ? as I'm a bit sceptical of anything I hear over the phone these days.
My current policy seems to have improved as it now appearss to include cover over 125 but it looks like your premium goes through the roof € 75.00 extra and your cover goes through the floor. See here page 12 http://www.blueinsurance.ie/common/Irl_Broker_Policy_2014-2015.pdf. Interesting topic but a nightmare

Well this site is always full of useful information. It appears I traveled 8,000KM across Europe last year without travel insurance. Had a look at the VHI policy and it definitely excludes 50CC and over :blast. Insurance is due for renewal in 48 hours, so VHI will get a call tomorrow most likely followed by a call to the AA. Thanks for the heads up everyone :thumb

I know the feeling Norman. There's only phone numbers on the site but they record the conversations so keep a note of the operator and the time & date maybe ? Or ask the operator for an email in confirmation.
I'll hopefully be signing up later today so I'll read the small print & let you know. Although that's not foolproof either - last year I had a policy with WorldWide which implied the same conditions as the AA cover but when I specifically asked the question I was told yes, I'm covered for a bike of any capacity but that I have no Personal Accident or Personal Liability cover if I'm on the bike when I have the accident ! WTF ?? :blast

I rang Engineers suggestion. They quoted ₤90ish.
I rang AA. She said as above...no cc limitation as long as I've the appropriate licence and take reasonable precautions, such as wearing a helmet.
They don't quote over the phone so I went online.
Single trip world exc US and a few others €116.
Multi trip €42 to €56, depending on level of cover.
Can't understand why single is more expensive but the important thing is bikes are covered. :thumb2

I believe that some of the motorcycle tour companies use Goldcover - I know that MSL certainly used to, so one can perhaps hope that they have been checked out in both theory and practice over the years.

The cheapest is not always the best - you only really find out how good they are if you have to make a claim - Goldcover do seem to be knowledgeable on the subject of motorcycle travel insurance though. P.S. don't forget your pillion too.

Well this looks like the way to go, I'll be interested to hear from Jockser once he receives the paperwork, but as it says nothing to the contrary in the policy booklet I suppose you can assume your covered. Mine is up next month so will probably give it a go.

As for the UK companies mentioned in the above posts, almost all of them wont touch you with a barge pole when they hear you live in ROI ! Probably because of our compo culture !

After my phone call (time & date noted ;)) I thought I'd send them a mail but it bounced back. Did the online query submission but still haven't heard back. Signed up anyway, hopefully won't need it for anything more than the peace of mind :thumb
