Any suggestions for Irish company doing Travel Insurance, checked some out but wont cover to drive 1200 cc bike.

I looked at this foe a US trip and it is a problem.
AA said No.
VHI said No.
I did the ring around with no luck.
I went to Spain instead so didn't follow it up, The only work around was VHI for non-MC cover and an all inclusive bike insurance in the US for around €1000 for 3 months.

Does it have to be an Irish company - or one that covers Irish residents? We used Trailfinders for our 5 month policy. You'll pay an extra premium for motorcycle touring and USA, but there's no issue with the size of bike.

Hi Gerry,

Over 125cc is a big problem, I did a lot of research a couple of years ago and came up with this policy from Blue Insurance. If you fill in the form and go for the Grade 3 option under Hazardous Activities you will get a quote. It's a bit of a pain as I had a family policy and wanted to get the Grade 3 for myself but of course its everyone or no one so now I have two policies, a family one for the wife and kids and a seperate one for me. It's not too dear though.

The Uk companies won't touch you if you live in Ireland.

Mind you, my info is a couple of years old now so things might have changed !

Not true. See above. We are resident in Ireland and I'm in the process of making a curtailment claim with Trailfinders' people at the moment. In fact, we had a quote from another UK-based insurer for our Inagh to China trip (that did originally include a return via the US). Unfortunately, I no longer have their details, but I'll see if Roynie can remember the name of the company. It seems to be the Irish insurers that have an issue with bike touring - but there are UK companies that will provide cover.

I used Blue insurance on the American trip two years ago, I emailed them today and also tried by telephone, but no response from either, I will try again tomorrow, Also tried a travel agent and it seems they will not quote you anymore unless you book your flights with them, I will also give Trailfinders a go, Thanks for the feedback.

I used a local broker (one I do my bike and car insurance through) and they found me a company which covered above 125cc ("normal" upper limit).

policy is AXA Premier - It's an anual policy wich covers two of us worldwide (eg I wanted USA and India as a minimum)

Done through Countrywide ins brokers (Oakland) Cost higher than "normal" at £300 due to a minor medical declaration (AF)

I went with Blue insurance and also found multi trip better value than single trip Grade 3. I also spoke to Chill insurance, they stated you were covered for medical cover on a bike over 50cc but not personal accident, When you read their terms it states driving bikes up to 50cc so would be a bit doubtful. INSURANCE GRRRRRR.

Hi Gerry

The following link will take you to an Insurance quote thingy arranged by Paddy Tyson and Nich Brown of Overland magazine fame. Might be worth checking out and having a chat with Paddy and Nich about any specific requirements. They will be up to their uxters at the moment organising "The Overland Event" but I am sure they will be able to assist.:beerjug:

Might be worth a try as they seem to cover larger than just 125cc

That's who I use and it's a very comprehensive insurance. Good value on the multi trip too. The insurance is provided by holiday safe as Boatman uses.:thumb

One & the same provider.
Got this reply from them last Friday :
"Unfortunately we are unable to provide insurance to those living in the Republic of Ireland"

I'm away to try Multitrip now. Standby...

I googled this after reading the original post. I can't quite recall but I think it was travelinsurance.ie or something similar.
I got a quote of around €40 for up to 10 days around Europe on a bike up to 1600cc.

Google is your friend!!

Got the same as Jochen, not for the Irish, I got multitrip grade 3 for two people, from Blue Insurance for 99 euro, happy with that, I also read that Spain no longer wants to accept the EHIC Card and you may have to pay for hospital stay, so anyone travelling down there worth checking out.

Blue & MultiTrip have very similar cover & premium.

"Premium" one year policy, Europe only, Irish resident, on a motorcycle (not restricted to 125cc provided you've a suitable license & are wearing a helmet), max single trip 60 days, for someone approaching middle age sometime in the next few years….

Blue - €58
MultiTrip - €54

The only differences I can see in the important categories is :
Medical Expenses - €5m with Blue & €20m with Multi
Personal Accident - €38k with Blue versus €25k
Overseas Legal - €10k with Blue versus €15k

I'm inclined to go with Multi purely because the guy I spoke to was really helpful.
You pays your money & you takes your chances.

insurance

is that price europe only Jochen? on a grade 3 activity (motorbikes over 50cc with helmet no racing)
