Can one of you guys who has a new rear Tourance measure the depth of thread around the central band. I'm off on my hols and am trying to work out how much rubber I've used in the last 1200 miles so i can decide if a new tyre would be a good idea.

How many miles you gonna do on holiday?

a rear tourance is good for 8 - 10k miles.

I think they come with about 8mm depth as new.

Happy touring :thumb

I got 6600 out of the last one but this one doesn't seem to want to last as long, it's down to 6mm after 1200 miles.

HI Dellis,

It's 9mm. I have a new one sitting next to me waiting to be loaded on to bike for next trip out.

That's 3mm in 1200 miles! Something had got to be wrong here?? It's not tyre pressures as I check them regularly and they haven't dropped since the tyre was fitted.

Any ideas?

I remember thinking that ages ago.I came to the conclusion that when they have a lot of tread depth, the rubber moves more, and the tyre wears quickly. When the tyre has worn down a bit, less movement in the tread, and the tyre lasts longer.I was hoping to get one worn out,so it would last forever, but it never happened.Strange that

Maybe true... I like the thinking on the worn out everlasting tyre would be nice if that happened at about 4mm shall we say....

Dave :)

I plotted the wear-rate of a rear Tourance some time ago. The net result was as follows: 9mm to start, first 20% disappears relatively quickly; middle 60% seems to last forever; final 20% disappears even quicker than the first 20%. All figures are -ish. Allow for your own personal bu99eration factor. No kittens were harmed during the tests.

It went from about 3.5mm to nowt in one weekend of spirited riding, not a lot of miles covered. Hope this helps.

I really don't want to take thae chance of running out of rubber on a 9 day trip so I'm getting a new one fitted on saturday. I'll use the rest of this one later in the year. £70.99 fitted and balanced.

Thanks for your input,

Dave

I've been using the same tyre supplier for around 15 years after they helped me out with a tyre when all else failed, I'd been supplied a defective tyre by Direct Tyres if you remember them. Over this time I've bought a lot of tyres and I'm rewarded for customer loyalty with a very healthy discount :)

Bought a pair about a month ago they worked out at £129 fitted and balanced. The only thing I don't get discount on is balancing which works out at around a fiver a wheel when VAT's been added.

Sharples Tyres at Bolton they do mail order too and you'll find that you get a good discount and as you return the discount gets better. Just the way it should be :thumb
