Trials...........and tribulations

Does anyone know if there's a club or place to ride the bikes in North Oxfordshire (Oxford, Banbury, Milton Keynes or Aylesbury would suit)? Always wanted to have one. We went to watch the world championships when I was a kid (and someone travelled there to watch on a G/S, my first enocounter).

You could try oxfordixionmcc/

Or have a look in the ACU handbook under the south midlands in the centres & regions section.

ACU-HANDBOOK round about page51.

You can ride just about any trial you fancy once you have your ACU trials licence.

Pretty bombproof really....................it's a Honda

Currently it's the only EFi trials bike (Ossa are about to launch an EFi 2 stroke) and doesn't use a battery, so very trick ignition system with fuel pump run from the CDi and mounted inside the small alloy tank

Fuelling is extremely precise and the motor is a bit fiesty (powerful)

It's beautifully made, so typical of Honda Racing Corporation who build the engines and spec the bike

Most of the bike is alloy - exhaust/frame/tank/swingarm etc

It weighs just over 70kgs

There are easier and more competitive trials bikes, but most owners who have 4RT's love them for their uniqueness and quirks (bit like a GS)

They are pretty easy to look after...............regular oil & filter changes etc

Pidcocks (same as Pidcock BMW) are the UK importers - Parts are easy to get and cheap for Genuine Honda - rear disc £15, radiator £70 etc and there is a plethora of aftermarket parts and most 4RT's are tricked up with carbon parts

I've had a few 4RT's and love them, really satisfying to ride:thumb

Thanks for that....Appreciated....:thumb2 :)

Or if you look on the ACU website, there is an events section which shows all the ACU sanctioned events. A quick trawl through the 'trials' heading should turn up any number of clubs and events nearby.
I started riding them earlier this year, the Cheshire & North Wales centre has an event nearly every weekend, and the furthest I've had to drive is an hour. Four club trials grounds are within 10 minutes of my house!

WOW! Thanks for that! Never thought there'd be sooooo many! :beerjug: I must have a good look into this now. :D Brilliant!

Been reading this thread with more than a passing interest of late. I'm a lapsed TRF/MCC long distance trials man from many moons ago, and both me and my youngest were having a mooch around the NEC show today, having a dream on the odd bike or two when we stumbled across a solitary trials iron on the Honda stand.

Despite the £6995 price tag, the Honda Montesa Cota Respsol replica looked a peach! In fact we stood talking to another chap next to us about trials in general, to the extent at which my 19yr old is now quite whizzed up about having a bash.

For me, the idea of taking a light bike in the back of our T5 van holds far better appeal than trekking down to Lands End with a GS / Wasp outfit through the night, in all weathers!

The hunt for a cheaper trials iron for a couple of wobblers now begins...but what to get? Two stroke or Four? Twin shock or mono?

Google, wherefore art thou??? :thumb2

That's what mine is..................a 2007 (no model difference though) one - I paid £3k from a GS'er who'd had it from new and it came with all the HRC bits

Look for a secondhand one or try as many as you fancy

I'd recommend a Beta or a Mont for build quality - for a new style bike:thumb

you must be really good to ride a trials bike like that ..whats it like going over some of the big stuff like the cable drums and stuff i see some of the guys dropping off 10 feet high drops and it looks so easy whats it like on that bike ?

Think i would just stick to the old classic trials bike stuff going up and down some small hills and river beds on a 40 year old bike that would match my ability:D

Met some of the guys from this club earlier this year

http://www.northberksmcc.com/

Very friendly bunch, very beginner friendly too. Sadly never got to one of their trials, but well worth getting in touch with them.

Pretty much all our events are off this weekend

:(

Haven't ridden for two weeks now..... getting withdrawl symptoms!

:tears

Nope, just an average clubman

The bike flatters and will do lots of things - it has loads of power for a 250cc....................used to be ok in my early 20's and teens.................but a 15 year sabbatical away from trials and being over 40 doesn't help now:blast

I've got a bit of sympathy with Bianchi's mention of just wanting to wobble up an old river bed, because that's pretty much what I'd be aiming for, y'know a bit of genteel muddiness and silliness with a bit of really trying.

My lad on the other hand, takes things a bit more serious and wouldn't wait to show the Old Man up :blast

Haven't had chance to go to a local trial as they seem to be on hold until the Jan/Feb time, but do you reckon they'd have the patience for an Old Tosser? And easy-peasy section options!!

Can you still multiple enter and use just the one bike, still?

And I bet you're fecking ace...just modest...:D

NorthBerks MCC are an excellent club, they have some excellent club trials and also run the Wallace Cup which attracts the top UK riders and a fantastic arena trial, built by Stuart Robinson and the club members. The sections in the arena, are mostly man made, very spectacular, watching the likes of Dabil and Brown ride there though. If you've ever seen indoor trials, then the sections are very similar in the way they have to be ridden, but outside. They also have practice days there too, £6 for the day if your a member.

I would recommend you join a few clubs, gives you plenty of choice on where you can ride and the type of terrain. When I was riding, I was a member of Oxford ixion, NBMcc, Blackmore Vale, and a few others. There are a fair few clubs in your area, that have some excellent trials. If you want to get in to trials on the cheap, then get a 2 stroke, 4 stroke is my passion, but am only dreaming at the mo, as I haven't ridden for a few years,(a 1989 Honda RTL 250 Rothmans is on my wish list, very rare though)just observe for the club now. GasGas are very popular and then I'd say Beta in this area, but the best built, most reliable, are Montesa, as JB has said. There built in Spain, like most trials bikes, but are owned by Honda, with Honda engines. Used Bikes in the south tend to be less bashed about, than those from the north, as the sections down hear are mainly mud and tree roots on banks and hills, where as up north they have a lot of rocks and stream sections.

Buy trials & motox news paper from the news agents, it's weekly paper and has lots of info on club trials regs, events, dealers and a classified section for used trial bikes. You can look up for trials regs for a particular weekend and enter a trial in your area, or travel further afield. A lot of clubs have a practice area and there's plenty of friendly advice on hand.

Don't rush out and buy a bike, go to a few trials, watch and ask a few questions about what you can get for your money and have a go on all the makes of bike your interested in, there all pretty good these days, but all feel very different. BVM in Stroud have an excellent reputation and use to be an official BM Dealer, very nice people, bit pricey, but excellent service. Don't buy anything really old or obscure, as you'll almost certainly have lots of problems and hassle.

I know your pretty handy on a road bike, but riding trials will improve your skill, i.e throttle control and balance big time, most road racers ride trials and a lot of the best enduro Riders are ex trials riders.

Very good info and spot on:clap

I can echo BVM Moto @ Stroud, they have been Trials dealers for decades and know everything about the bikes and sport, they have an unrivalled excellent worldwide reputation. I used to buy my Trials bikes 30 years ago and when I returned to Trials in 2003, I bought my new Montesa 315R 2 stroke from Mark, even though it was a 500 mile round trip

They host manufacturers test days too, so you can try out the bikes FOC and these will be coming up Jan to April next year:thumb

As said, go watch a few trials................it's free to spectate

......tons of useful things....

Brilliant! Thanks, mate! :thumb2

If anyone's going spectating somewhere (near Aylesbury, Oxford, Northampton, Milton Keynes, Banbury, etc), feel free to ping me a PM to let me know as I'd like to tag along (time permitting). :thumb2 :thumb2 It would be 30 years since I spectated on trials. :blast

Oxford Ixion club champ Trial on the 30/12/10 at 11.00. Foxs farm, Beckley, near Oxford.

Don't think I'll be trying this anytime soon:eek:
