Trickle charging over winter

So, this can bus system ...

Can I simply mount a fused lead across the battery and use my current battery charger (Lidl's finest) and heated jacket when needed or do I have to get an expensive can bus friendly type?

Sorry, as a posh person, my new BMW doesn't have a Canbus system bus and other mass transit systems are for poor people.

My new RT has a CanLimo system...

i agree with above if i know I'm out the following day on the bike , i connect the charger the night before..leaving the trickle machines on 24/7 can also be dangerous…..according to some that own Oxford ones ..

Don't disagree with the above but said connection need not be used ALL the time and would be handy for plugging in my heated jacket which has the same type of connector.

I have put a optimate lead straight onto the battery, and it's always plugged in when in the garage.

No problems so far......................

Did the same with my K1600 and K1300.

Yup. That's what folk normally do. Aux socket direct to battery (via fuse of course).

Nothing wrong with long term trickle charge as such but it will conceal a weakening battery.

thats the way i do it

I have trickle charger lead,Heated Clothing lead & Sat Nav lead attached to my Battery, though using longer
Terminal Bolts. As before, when i know i'm going to use my Bike, i put the Charger on the Day before,
my GS has'nt an Alarm so never seem's to need much charging.

Connect straight to the battery via a fuse, saves disturbing the flow of can bus fluid.

I left mine for 3 months without a charger.
Started fine.
My yammie I left on a trickle for 4 months. Battery was fine. No fires or boiled battery.

Flip a coin an take a chance.

Ditto, with five years of charging my '05 RT using an CTEK XS800. Just recently had to change the original 9 yr old battery, which was losing a bit of charge as the CTEK clicked in quite often. Precautionary change for trip to Norway - just in case the weather got nasty (See Boatman in June this year at Nordkapp!). Happily weather was FANTASTIC

Got to make sure that it is a 'sensing' charger i.e. when the voltage drops to a specified value, the charger kicks in for a wee while boosting the voltage back up to acceptable levels. Don't want a 'trickle' charger on all the time. Definitely could cause overheating, warping of plates....
