Trip meter

Hi all,
Just back from a trip to the Alps.
To keep a record of my total trip mileage I reset trip one to zero and only used trip 2 when filling the tank. I always reset trip 2 to measure tank range.
The problem is that trip meter 1 has been resetting even although I never touched it. Is this a fault or do the have a limit like perhaps 500 miles etc ?
I reset the average mpg a few times but wouldn't have thought this would affect the trip meter.
Confused.com

It only records up to 999 miles before it goes back to zero. Bit bizarre but thats the way it is
