Hi, guys.

There is a small group of us coming down to Devon/Cornwall for a long weekend after Easter. We'll be camping.

Can anybody recomend any good campsites with eating and drinking establishments nearby?

Also any must do roads/tracks and areas to be avoided.

I'm sitting here with my head stuck in maps and would appreciate the local knowledge.

Thanks,

Del

Hi Del,

Here’s some places to consider…..

Sparkhayes Farm camp site in Porlock is a good site and is staggering distance from the pub!
Take the A39 from Bridgwater, which takes you along the North Somerset coast, the campsite is just off Porlock High Street, down Sparkhayes Lane.

Carry on West along the A39 to Minehead, grab a cupa in the station café (a converted railway carrage), and then onto Lynmouth, up the winding hill past Lynton and on towards Ilfracombe. Rejoin the A39 at Barnstaple and head down the West Coast towards Bude and Tintagel where there is another campsite that’s handy for the pub, the Headland Caravan and Camping Park, I’ve not been there myself I found it on the BMF site so should be ok

If you want to go further South then carry on down to Padstow, a lovely part of Cornwall, and follow the B3276 from Padstow to St Merryn where if you turn right at the village centre, by the pub, you’ll find the Higher Harlyn Caravan park just along the road (used this place a lot). Check out Harlyn Bay, the pub down there does an excellent roast.

Hope this is of some help.

...... and areas to be avoided.

Avoid:

Ilfracombe. Shithole and the locals are traditional North Devon Savages.
Newquay and Paignton. Kiss-me-quick hats and chavs.
Most of in-land Cornwall. It's bleak or just plain ugly.
Plymouth. Nothing worth a visit unless it's the ferry-terminal on your way to somewhere nice (Ocean Motorrad is ok if you need anything though).
Buying anything in Salcombe or Dartmouth. Yachtie types, so quadruple the prices of anything you'd expect to pay elsewhere.

Otherwise:

North Devon. Has some fantastic scenery and roads that have been left with very little traffic after the A361 North Devon Link was opened.
Cornwall. Stick to the coastal fringes. It's chalk and cheese compared to the inland squallor.
South Devon. Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Salcombe. Nice places and the A379 from Plymouth (just don't stop there) is a great road to Dartmouth via Slapton. You can take the ferry at Dartmouth to Kingswear, push on through Paignton (if you keep your eyes squinted you will not see the worst bits) to Torquay (not as bad as Paignton but has lost the old Genteel Air it once had).
East Devon is nice but if on a short timescale do the other bits first.

If you end up around Porlock and fancy some wind in hair(lidless) riding there is a Toll road that winds through the pretty scenery of Exmoor Park (here) near the town. Zoom in on Porlock Weir and you'll see Worthy toll road :thumb

Avoid:

Devon - Bit dreary :dabone

Otherwise:

Cornwall. Much nicer, prettier and a better class of people :thumb

Places to go, well lots of nice roads around west cornwall. Try St Ives to St Just. Great views out over the cliffs.

There is a couple of decent camp sites around St Ives and a decent on near Truro (Shortlanesend) to keep you in the middle a bit more.

Also, a must do is the Roseland penninsula and around Carrick Roads (the river down to Falmouth)
