We had lots yesterday 
But a gang of pikeys emptied all the grit boxes out onto the back of their flat back Transits .............
Police notified by 7 diferent people but not urgent enough for a call out in bad weather .............
They even took the grit from my Mums retirement apartment ..............................
But she's OK because someone offered to lay grit for £5 per appartment after i cleaned the snow away
Wonder what van they were in ............

Why is it that we are in the biggest winter snow fall and continuous amounts of snow for quite some considerable time, and there are all these people out there complaining about not being able to do what they normally do.
There was a gentleman on Reporting Scotland last night complaining about how he managed to come down a hill in his car, and where there was a bend at the bottom of the hill he had not managed to get round the corner. Unfortunately the gentleman managed to hit some metal bollards at the corner and so he damaged his car. And then he starts complaining about how the roads have not been gritted and that it is the council's fault.
It does seem a bit strange that people are unwilling to do anything other than what the "normally" do without taking consideration of the conditions. But it's okay, its the Council's fault.
Am I getting old, or what?

At 08:00hrs this morning the Paisley roads depot for Renfrewshire Council had no salt.
Not surprising really, this is the longest, snowiest and coldest winter we've had for some time. I think it's great, bring it on, lets have proper winters again. If this is the result of climate change I'm off to burn some more fossil fuels.
Why does everyone expect the council to do everything. How many folk have fitted winter tyres to their cars? How many people actually have shoes with decent treads to help grip in the snow and slush?
Mind you, I did have a moment on the way to work when using second gear to descend a hill into Barrhead at just 20mph the wheels started to slide without using the brakes
Still, my almost worn out tyres will be replaced with nice new winter tyres that have been on order since the middle of December and are en route.

Yeah but - global warming could actually mean that we get colder - cos the North Atlantic drift keeps us much warmer than we should be for our latitude - and if that gets buggered up cos of melting ice-caps then we could actually get colder! which would be a pain cos I wouldn't be able to ride my bike as much :-(

While, in general, I agree with Rev Chucks's observations and also with Packers comments on sensible footware and tyres etc, I think the main problem this year has been the sustained cold rather than the amount of snow? - and because we use pure salt in the gritters nowadays it tends to aggravate the problem - salt does not work below -6deg( I think

When I was a youngster in the '50's they spread grit on the roads (hence the name "gritters") and on packed snow or ice this gave you GRIP
Unless you have STUDDED tyres(or shoes!) your still going to slide oot o' control on packed ice etc - "winter" tyres on sale in UK are usually classed as M & S (Mud & Slush) and just like knobblies on a bike, they don't work well on an ice layer on top of packed snow or sheet ice - - they need to be able to "bite" into the surface.
Our local paper today shows several streets in towns with police "closed" signs because they have a couple of inches of packed snow with an ice layer on top!! - gravel would make these streets perfectly usable & safe - but until temps rise, salt would probably make them worse
