In prep for my trip through Africa to Cape Town at the end of this year, I was wondering what the general consensus was on the Touratech Steering stop hardpart.

At £100 it seems steep for what it’s worth, is this a common point of failure for a 1150GSA?

Are they worth it?

Are they worth it?

Probably not.

It didn't stop me from buying one (before I knew any different :blast).

You've probably read the TT blurb on why they sell them and given the nature of your trip it might be a good idea to have some sort of protection against damaged fork-tubes and trapped brake-line in the event of a spill but a DIY solution is probably going to be a whole lot cheaper (and possibly just as effective).

Caught between a rock and a 'hardpart'!

I bought the Touratech one when I had an R1150GSA some years ago and had no problems with broken steering stops when I had dropped the bike which I did quite a lot offroad.

Nowadays i'd probably just zip tie some rubber blocks to the forklegs or wishbone and save a few tanks of fuel money.

It's the wee rubber blocks on the hardpart that give the 'protection' anyway and although i'm a big fan of Touratech products it's an example of over engineering to solve a simple problem. The spring loaded bracket that keeps the brakeline out of the way when the steering turns is a work of teutonic art.......!

Good call, I think I might just do that. Do you have any pics of you handywork?
