I dont know if this is in the right Mods? if not please move .....:augie

This coming March, I and a couple of other tossers ( I will not name and shame them, yet ) are considering the Tuareg Rally, now we have not Rallieeeedd before but have travelled extensively on bikes....

Major problems we have:

We are complete novices in the competitive biking world. Except for Tirals riding in the past.

We need to get the bikes and prep them for the rally. Maybe Katoons, we don't know yet..

We need to do a couple of enduro's? or similar

We might need someone to train us.

We need to get fit.

We don't have very long to prepair...

Positives:

We're obsessed! :blast

We have a mechanic and a support vehicle, a couple of competent individuals who will help us whilst on the event. We have pretty good resources and lots of experience in planning expeditions etc.

We're not deluded to think we could rank anywhere, we just want the experience.

We got a bit of money ( ickle bit ).

Now if the others in our group (out) themselves we will keep this thread going with our attempts to prepare and compete in this rally.

All advice and piss taking welcome, if any one takes pitty and wants to help we will be very beer friendly:jager

I've only have experiance from the Alto Turia but the bit's I'd pass on are:

Getting in lots of green lane miles and hours made a difference - I had a 180 mile route and would just get at and do it on my own in what ever weather, nothing to technical it just made me bike fit.

Having the road book positioned correctly and having the IMO calibrated meant that navigation did not distract and mistakes where few and that meant less stress and riding mistakes.

Hydration and food makes a big diffrence it was like an on off swith when I got it right or wrong.

If I had the funds I'd love to do the Tuareg on my Airhead however I would think my X- Challange would make a great bike if I was looking after myself beacuse:

I'm not the fastest so a fast/light bike (ktm) would not make that much diffrence
The XC offers a bit comfort and you will have to knock of the miles
You'd not have to fettle thing and change the oil every night
It has a good fuel range

That said having the same bikes will reduce the need for diffrent spares

I hope it all comes together for you.

Thanks

Thanks for the tips.. Still not sure what bikes to use, 450 exc seems the norm which tends to push me that way, at least I might be able to pick up a cheap one and scrounge parts if need be. I'm not a fast rider, but I was thinking a light bike means less strain so I can bank that energy for when I need it..?

Jonnywave,
Great to hear you are going to do a rally. There two aspects to this post:-

1. We can certainly help with bike training
2. We might come along with you.

Miles is right in his post - the two aspects are bike fitness and long riding stints and the other is navigation. The key thing on rallies is NOT to ride at 100% but to navigate correctly and minimize mistakes. If you can ride green lanes and some of the tougher trails in Wales then you will have no problems.

We have a big training route in Wales if you are interested just PM me.

Cheers

Burt

that sounds fantastic..

As far as bike time, iv just spent 4 month riding in Alaska, Canada, and lower 48, only about 5k miles of the 18000 were off road though:confused:

There a three of us who are interested and various resources including mecanic and other support crews bods. Plus a few options for support vehicles i.e kitted 4x4 etc if we want to go that way.. including our own Expedition Doc if we are so worried lol. :clap

Today I turned to the dark side and purchased the bike: KTM 450 exc.... :pullface Got various bits on order so with a bit of luck I will be out on the trails this weekend...

Iv never used road books on bikes so I have much to learn..If you guys are up for it, why not join forces....:thumb

I will drop you a pm to chat about training..

Pair of fecking Dakar wannabe's we are!:blast I've sorted us out with all the training we need with Mick Extance (Dakar hard man extraordinaire) If we're lucky, we might be able to touch him...:D

Anyone else fancy doing this rally with us? Rollcall....:cool

Get the KTM 525 next week :D and will then begin the mods.

Burt, I just read your post in detail, sorry, but I missed the bit about training in Wales, sounds like a great plan, and might not be a bad idea for us all to converge at an RV at some point and discuss in more depth:beerjug:

If I thought I was good enough on the HP I would give that ago. A lot more affordable than I ever thought.:)
