Tubeless Puncture repair kit

Hi,
I apologise if this has been covered; I did look back.
Does anyone have any experience of these kits; emergency use only, I am aware.
Are the new mushroom kits better than the triangle shaped plugs,or are the mushrooms a gimic. M and P sell a bunch.
I need to hear from someone who has used one or even both types you unlucky bugger!

While on two trips to Alaska, three of us have had three flats. I used the stock BMW donut with good effect. A friend had a 'sticky rope' plug inserted at a tire repair shop, also with satisfactory results. Second friend used a mushroom plug only to have it start to leak after 150 miles (out of 275 to the next town). A can of the liquid flat fix got us into town.

In all cases the tires were replaced at the first opportunity, although the first two looked like they were 'permanent'.
 
I carry a couple of kits in Morocco- the rat tail type.

Officially yes, they're listed as a temporary repair, but I've used several tyres for many thousands of miles after a repair- it's probably only the repair kit company covering their arse by saying it's a temp affair :)

The Rat tailed repair strips are great 'cos you can get several in the same hole if you need to :)

I used the rat tail repair on 6 or 7 punctures on last years boreen run, my own included which was new at the time,
that tyre is down to the canvas and is only being replaced now. :thumb2
 
I've used 'em many times.... mostly for customers, friends and associates. Work a treat, never failed me and when I've used them for myself the repair has lasted the remaining life of the tyre :eek:

Wouldn't use the tyre goo/sealants stuff ... known it not to work and then you can't use the said repair kit :eek:

I've had to use the BMW Tubeless Puncture Repair Kit (mushroom type plugs) twice now, and in both cases was more than impressed.

Although the instructions state,"after repair, don't exceed 60km/h or ride for more than 600 km", my last repair hastily conducted in a Ukrainian petrol station on a rainy Saturday evening lasted 1300km at speeds of up to 150km/h before I was able to get the tyre replaced.

Interesting that that kit says no glue needed........Mine has the same rat tails in it but comes with glue and the instructions say use it, so we always have.......the rat tails are pretty sticky but i reckon if there's any chance of the whole being the slightest bit irregular (even with a good reaming out) then I'd still use the glue as well....belt and braces :)

Did the kit also come with patches for tubes? If so thats what the glues for :thumb2

I'll probably now go for the rat's tail design rather than the mushrooms; sound like ordering at a restaurant!
Fanum, I don't know if you're to do with Moto Morocco, but I was hoping to go with you you, level 2, later this year, but the trip was too long for my wife to spend it in the support vehicle. Yes I do like to holiday with my wife. Going on a short trip in May to endurorepublic in Portugal. We are riding down on the GS, but obviously using their Hondas there. If it goes well, maybe Morocco will still follow but later on.

i thought the same and carry a tube of glue in the kit:thumb2
 
That's me in the titles occasionally reading the instructions for my rat tails in the car park at Benadout, Morocco after pulling a 6 inch nail out of the rear tyre.

It held air for the remaining 5 days, and for the next 3 months, 5,000 miles. In fact the rear has only deflate because of another cut.
 
I've just bought a Rat-Tail kit (Air pro... whoever they are)
I've read the instructions for inserting the rat tail into the reamed hole. It states that the insertion tool should then be turned 90 degrees and pulled out.
As I've never done this before and would like to prevent a cock up at the side of the road one day could any of you guys give me a 'simple for a tosser' explanation please.

I used mine it was easy removed the nail & used the pointed tool to clean the hole fitted the rats tail to the tool (so tool is in center of rats tail) push tool in to tyre (don't push tails right through)twist & pull tool out, trim off tails put tyre pressure back up then ride away :D
try on an old tyre before you swop it :thumb2
