Grateful for some advice, particularly from Steptoe if you are still here?

I have a 2005 1150GSA to which I am currently fitting a Remus y piece and Remus revolution end can, with baffle fitted.

My questions are:

1) do I need to get a performance chip to go with the new exhaust system, in which case what are my options?

2) if a chip isn’t an option, do I need a power commander and dunno remap?

3) as an alternative can I adjust the motronic via the coding plug to cater for the new exhaust, in which case can someone tell me how to do this.

My main concern is that the engine will run too lean with the new exhaust.

Many thanks

Speak to Geoff at Hilltop I am sure you will get the answer and a very great bike .....

Will your bike retain the O2 sensor?

if so, I recommend this, it works very well.

none of the cat code plug maps will be any richer than stock (* other than at idle, they are typically leaner than stock under rapid throttle openings)

What Mikey said.
You can email John Gemi directly at: [email protected]
He'll need to know the details of your bike like exhaust, air filter (standard of the free flowing K&N) and what type of riding you want it for, but the results are hard to beat for the money.
I used to run a Remus Y piece and Revoultion like you've just fitted and though it sounded great, it was a pain on longer rides. So I switched to the standard cat and a stubby. John recommended his Stage 9 chip which cost me £50 and arrived from Greece in 4 days. Mikey fitted it when he serviced my bike last June, and as soon as I picked the bike up post-service, it was immediately apparent that things were very different; smoother, more responsive and lots more torque, which for me is more important than outright power as I'm not the world's faster rider and don't do track days etc. Riding back home through Leicester, there's a big roundabout with loads of traffic lights, and I was rolling up to the lights in second gear when they changed; gave it the normal amount of throttle and up came the front wheel, even with my 17 stone in the saddle. It never did that before. I can't quantify the extra torque as a dyno test seems irrelevant to my riding style, but on a 2000 mile into Germany on a route I'd tavelled twice before, it was mcuh easier on the long steep climbs through the Ardennes and Hunsruck.
Since the service, the oil temperature on the RID shows one less bar than before which suggests its running cooler than before; maybe because of the chip, or maybe because after Mikey's expert fettling everything is working properly. Both were money very well spent.

This is a good mod for smooth running and more flexible cooler running engine. Got one on mine well worth it. I don’t think you can buy bolt on power for the r1150gs engine. Just have a fast bike too :D

Thanks to everyone who has replied to my post, the knowledge and support is very much appreciated. I’ve emailed John in Greece with details of my bike and asked if he can do a chip for me. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again guys

Apologies for a slight hi jack.. But is there any merit in putting one of these chips on a stock bike? specifically a 96 1100?

I can't say for certain because my bike came with the Remus y piece and Revolution can, and I changed it to the cat + stubby, so I have no experience of how the bike went with the stock system. I can say things are radically better with John's chip. BMW gave every bike the same "one size fits all" calibration, regardless of where it went in the world, what octane fuel it would use, how it was ridden and any mods to the inlet or exhaust systems. John's chips address the characteristics of the mods a lot of us make to standard settings and he's done a huge of amount of work in developing the various stages of his chip. I originally asked about the Stage 10 as Mikey fitted one to Tufty's bike with impressive results, but based on my set up and what I told him I wanted, John recommended the Stage 9 instead. I haven't been disappointed.
I chose to have Mikey fit mine because he was servicing the bike anyway (plus I'm a lazy git), but the job is easily within the scope of the home mechanic; a mate of mine in Canada bought John's chip for his Rockster and fitted it in his garage in just under 2 hours, start to finish. The only bit he found difficult was actually inserting the chip to the holder because he needs glasses for close stuff but is too vain to wear them, so he solved that problem by having his 12 year old son fit the chip.
When I bought mine John was offering a discount to UKGSer's and it only cost me £50; can't imagine it be hugely more expensive a year on, so for the cost of a night out with the other half, you could transform your bike. If you don't like the result, you can just refit the stock chip.

I put a Stage 4 chip on my 99 1100 a few years ago not long after John Gemi first started doing them. I now have a straight through pipe with a remus end can but tried various exhausts. The bike never had an O2 sensor or cat. The chip is smooth with more torque and rideability. Fitted it myself in a few hours including setting up the throttle balance and TPS etc. You will definitely see a difference and if you tell John your bike details he will make sure it is right for a stock exhaust.

I fitted one of Johns chips to my 1150, cat & stubby. Biggest difference I noticed was the ability to ride in a higher gear at lower speed. I guess that the mixture is richer under those conditions.

My only "problem" was splitting the housing to get at the chip, but, that's probably just my phobia kicking in!
