Re the TomTom Rider, for navigation it wasn't actually that bad. The main limitation is not being able to record routes that you can later share or drop into Google Earth. I also didn't realise that it only had the major routes for Albania so I was blind from the border to Pogradec. The Turkey map was very useful but it didn't converge with the Western and Central Europe map so I had to navigate as close as I could to the Bulgarian border and then swap maps.
I hadn't bothered to pay the extra £40 for the map of Greece which was quite frustrating when I took to the back-roads below the Macedonian border. Looks like I will be putting a Zumo 660 on my combined birthday/Christmas list.

Have you tried the TYRE software? (http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/)
It uses google maps/earth to allow you plot waypoints and then transfer it on to the TomTom, which can then be shared etc...
(and it's free!)

Malcolm, you are my hero! From a bloke who had bought a GS six months ago(?), fell off three times(?) in the first mile on his second ride out, broke the sidestand switch and clutch in the next three miles and got vanned home (further wrecking the bike) to this. I am very very impressed matey!

LOL. In my defence John, I would just like to point out that these were TRF outings in the Peak and not just a ride round the corner to the shops. Most of the other bikes were proper dirt bikes. Not many GSs have been down the Roman Road at Stanage and survived. Mine almost didn't.
The ride with John on his 1150 Adventure and a mate on KTM 950A involved some sort of glutinous muck that is known only to the evil farmers and fields of Melton Mowbray. I suspect it was mainly excess gravy from all the pies. Even a Land Rover was struggling. Unfortunately my little GS doesn't have the ground clearance of John's Panzer tank and I was ploughing a deep furrow through the mud with my bash plate. The side stand switch clogged up and everything came to halt. After some electrickery I made it another two hundred yards before the clutch packed up. I'm on to my third side stand switch now. A real Achilles heel on the bike.
And what's the point of investing in crash bars if your not going to throw the bike down from time to time.
Might see you tonight at Tamsin Jones event if my stomach stops rumbling.

I did have a go with TYRE and TomTom once but mainly to see if I could plot off road routes, which didn't seem to work. I've now got a Memory Map 2800 Adventure device which uses OS maps, and I can plan and record off road routes on that. It doesn't have world mapping though so not much use on this trip.
I don't think there is any way of recording routes at all on a TomTom unless anyone knows different. I'm not sure TYRE would have helped on this trip as I was planning from day to day and didn't have a PC with me. Looks like an interesting product though, especially as it's free.

Not to hijack, Tommy is a crap I told you all about it. Get yourself a Zümo 550 rather than 660. Has better handling capacity such as recording and accepting tracks when offroading .
