Intro:
Route planning has been in the making for sometime. We tend to start planning our next holiday soon after returning from a holiday.
This trip was to head back to the South of France and take in some more of the Alps, with a few days in one place and then a few more days off the bike. We plan to stay off the motorways as much as possible except when we need to make distance.
If anyone would like the routes please drop me a PM and i'll send them to you.

The Route:

We have been down this way before so I already have some routes and waypoints saved. Pinched a few ideas for some routes to ride off the Interweb and a few planned in basecamp looking for twisty roads.

Day 1, see's us heading south from Harrogate to the Channel Tunnel crossing over to Calais for our first nights stop in Arras. Booked in to the Ibis Styles. We've stopped off here before so we know what we are getting.

Day 2, heading to Dijon for our second night stop. Staying off the motorway today, the weather was mixed with a fresh start and we hit a big patch of mist/ fog that lasted for about an hour, then we had lovely warm sunshine for the rest of the journey.
We booked into the Ibis Styles in Dijon. This was the first time we have stayed here and have to say we weren't disappointed.
A few pictures of the decor

The beer was nice and cold and the food wasn't too bad either.

Day three, we head towards Grenoble. Having been through Grenoble a few times over the years, I swore never to go through the town again as we always seem to get on the long straight road with more sets of traffic lights and tram lines than anywhere else. However this time, we planned to arrive early afternoon so we could get the cable car up the mountain to see the views over the town. The cable cars are one of the first urban cable cars in the world second to Rio de janeiro. 6 euro each for a return journey. I must say it was definately worth the effort. Oh did I mention it was 28 deg's....

Day 4, leaving Grenoble for our next stop off in Castellane following the Route Napoléon. We were here for three nights as I had planned two day trip riding rounthe the Gorge de Verdon and another day through the national park. We had booked into the Nouvel Hotel Castellane, as recommended from someone on the site. Very nice hotel, private parking round the side and plenty of places to eat.

A few pictures from the day.

The two days ride out's had been planned and routes put together in Basecamp. Day 1 from the hotel carpark turn LEFT and day 2 turn RIGHT

Day1

I had mainly planned the route around the dam's and some twisties and see where it took us. I must say even though the route had to be changed due to road closure’s we were not disappointed at all. I'll leave the pictures to do the talking...

Looks great.
Will you attach the gpx files?

Day 2 ride.
Gorge de Verdon was the main route on my list. Having watch numerous videos on YouTube and added a few roads of my own, I was really looking forward to see what this days side would offer.

Again the roads offered a good variety along with fantastic scenary. I think it's the only time I have looked down on a helicopter when standing on the ground. So I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Todays ride was just about 100 miles and we were out most of the day, taking in stops for refreshments and a bite to eat. The roads were a pleasure to ride and not a lot of traffic. I guess being after the main summer holiday helps.

The route for today attached.

After our three night stop off we then headed down to Menton where we stopped for four nights. A few days off the bike sight seeing spending a day in Monaco. We were there last year and had some unfinshed business so a easy bus ride to Monaco was planned.

A scenic route through a national park on our way to Monaco / Menton

A few pictures from our visit to Monaco and Menton.
We had a 5th floor self catering appartment in Menton, underground parking. 5 min walk to the bus station and about 15 min to the train station.

From Menton we headed north slowly making our way home with the night stop over in Besançon.

This route again planned to take in as many twisty roads as I can, and boy it didn't disappoint.
We were pleasantly surprised to find that some of the route had been used in the Tour de France. Thankfully not too many cyclists on the road.

From here on the roads weren't so exciting mainly staying off the motorways heading up through the center of France.

One final site we visited was The Canadian National Vimy Memorial.

No words needed...

16 Days door to door 2800 miles. Not one day of rain and temperatures of 30 Degs.
A great trip, but so much more to see, so until next time.

That's ALL. :thumby:

Nice trip. Good photos too. In my 20s I went from Dover to Nice in one day on an R80/7 with an RS fairing fitted-took about 13 hours. Utter madness and it took about 2 days to recover.

.Enjoyed that, thanks. I have a childhood friend in Grenoble and haven't got there yet, so its on the list!
