hi all,
fairly new to all this gs thing
i am looking at a twin cam 2012 thats up for sale but its been factory lowered,, is this a case of just replacing the shocks to put back to standard ( its a non esa ) or is there more involved ?
many thanks :beerjug:

Factory lowered is generally

F & R shock - Side & centre stand & or seat

However before you spend best part of £800

try moving the seat onto the higher setting.

It moves the seat height approx 15mm

I couldn;t get my feet down even with fac lowered when the seat was in the high position

hi santa, thanks for that, i would like to put in either wilbers or nitron shocks at some point anyway, so was hoping that there wasnt much else to it, wasnt sure if the frame was diffrent or something, i am a smidge under 6ft and i have ridden a gsa so hopefully no probs in height although i will try the seat in the high position as you suggest first :beerjug:

As the engine bolts to the frame and VV

you'd need a small engine for a small frame - ;)

one engine one frame :)

If you do get it and intend to put it back to std height, I have had mine lowered by having the shocks refurbished and shorter springs fitted by Denzo but still have the std centre and side stands fitted, if parts are interchangeable fancy a swap?
Maybe Denzo can fit longer springs to your shocks, would a cheaper option than Wilburs.
Mine is a 2006 GS.

Hi gents
Changing springs will not extend the shocks.
However, installing stiffer spring and setting proper preload could gain you extra 30mm of suspension travel.

1200gs is under sprung even with maximum preload most of us will have 70-85mm of dynamic sug.

Ideal sug for lowered suspension will be 40-55mm on the front and rear.

Cheaper option emulsion Wilbers is way behind with performance from OEM PDS shocks.
You need at least Nitron with separating piston to get close to that performance. And you will only find PDS in top dollar TT shocks.
Ohlins TTX will be nice for road use.

I did wonder if it would work as I was writing it Denzo!.

As an aside, very happy with the work you did lowering mine, with what’s going on at present I haven’t ridden it as much as I would have liked, but certainly an improvement and definitely easier for me with the 30mm reduction in height, thanks again.

hi all,
thanks for all the advice, very much appreciated :beerjug:
puts me in the picture of what i need to do if i go ahead and buy it

This is exactly what I did, the Wilbers were awesome and very well worth it. Sold the stock shocks for £500 taking the sting out of the Wilbers. Changed the centre stand. Didn’t bother with the side stand, glued a black hockey puck plus a couple of self tappers, raised the stand enough and gave me a big foot as well.
