Welcome

Welcome to the mad house.

Twinspark was introduced at the end of 2002 / early 2003 for emmisions in Germany, specifically the TUV test. Therefore an already know trick of twin plugging to reduce emmissions was used. I have ridden both type of bikes and there is little difference.

The later 1150s (certainly '03 on, not sure how much earlier and if it coincides with the EVO ABS?) have two plugs per cylinder (the second one is "hidden" way underneath, so there's a handy "Twin Spark" on the rocker box cover.

BMW claim it cleans up combustion to help meet current and future emissions standards. Some claim it cures surging, others claim it doesn't.

Mine's a twin spark and I don't suffer from surging. Some aftermarket bits (head protectors) are different for the twin spark so you have to order the right version.

Rumour has it that the upgrade to two spark was an accountant led wheeze purely to sneak a hopeless out of date engine with inefficient combustion chambers into as many 'emission controlled' markets as they could without paying for a proper redesign.

Positive effect on ease of fuel mapping, torque, reliability, power or engine durability? Dubious.

Has anyone tried to fit twin spark heads?

Has anyone tried to replace single spark heads on an 1150GS with twin spark heads.
I need to fit new exhaust studs on one side and someone is selling a pair of twin spark heads, so I wondered if it can be done?

I haven't done it myself, but twin spark heads have a dowel on them, knock that off and i think they should fit.
