Some of you may remember that Berin, Dr JM, Possu and I tried to ride from Streatley to Barbury Castle in Wiltshire on as many trails as possible in July 2008. Well, the going was harder than we thought and we didn't get a lot further than Lambourn... :mmmm

Due to a number of injuries suffered by various protagonists since (in chronological order: Possu - collar bone, Berin - wrist, Pumpy - humerus, Dr JM - bike) it took us almost a year to make the second attempt.

So, last Sunday we met again on the car park behind The Bull in Streatley. This time we were also joined by Strobingred and his trusty DRZ.

I have still not figured out how to get round Bower Farm without leaving the legal route, so we picked up the Ridgeway from Rectory Road. After all the quarrel about users and usage, The Ridgeway is probably the most famous green lane in the country. However, until the Compton Downs it's all hard packed dirt and gravel, not a surface that would get damaged by riding a motorbike along, and perfect to get into the flow.

Then onto Dennisford Road to the subway under the A34 - here comes Berin

Dr JM - clearly enjoying herself - followed by tailend Possu

We even made it as far as Stanmore before the first roadside repair... :augie

Well, not quite the legal angle - but, Officer, should Strobingred have pushed his bike home? :angel

Great bike for trail riding the Beta Alp 200, don't you think?

It took a while until Mr Berin appeared out of the woods - having had a little tumble or so we heard... :augie

Dark Lane has been seriously graded recently - no more waist-deep mud puddles :( - and Beedon Byway No.22 is still closed until the end of November

However, the lane through Pope's Wood provided good entertainment, as always... :D

Berin demonstrated his advanced pushing technique which he had acquired on his recent Off Road Skills Level 2 course... :hide

Whereas Dr JM had learnt her previous lesson about choosing the right rut! :thumb2

The group just emerging from the undergrowth - this lane is a little gem: branching off from the Tour of Berkshire leading up to Haycroft Hill: far too short to be taken seriously and therefore completely overgrown. Best to be ridden tucked away neatly below your handlebars...

Around lunch time we had already reached Lambourn, last year's turning point...
603045256_24s9M-L.jpg

... where we settled for sandwiches next to the cemetery, as all the nice Cafés are shut on Sundays...
603045428_3rqZu-L.jpg

Talking of lunch, unfortunately my lunch break is over and I have to stop for now. Mind you, building up a bit of suspense won't do any harm -

Would we finally make to Barbury Castle this time? :eek

To be continued...

There was a huge bog! And a deep rut full of water! And brambles! Possibly bears :augie

That's the only reason I was pushing - wrong rut:D

And, actually, they do teach advanced pushing on Level 2.You can't just go ahead and push, you know - there's a technique:rob

After lunch even the bikes seemed to switch into Siesta-mode... :augie

Don't bother hiding, Clive, we have seen your bike touching the ground!

I'm sure this climb reminded him of a certain ski slope in the Dolomites...

Well, some landowners really ought to cut their weeds more often... :augie

We had Sugar Hill ahead of us...
603041116_BuhcY-L.jpg

... when Strobingred fell off hurting his wrist again and decided to call it a day. Only the next morning he found out that the joint was actually broken! Tough material these ex-RAF types... :eek
603134671_L7VQa-L.jpg

I feel really guilty now that I just let Clive go home on his own - but at that particular time I was a bit busy getting stuck in the wrong rut...
603134938_XyxE5-L.jpg

Fortunately my knight in shining armour came to the rescue... :kissy2

... but I bet if there was a moment when Possu regretted bringing his SE instead of the 400EXC it was on the Sheepwalk... :augie
603135323_gjEWu-L.jpg

Men have their uses and it pays off to take them along - especially when it comes to opening rusty locks on gates like here at Gore Lane Farm... :augie

Nice to have a captivated audience... :rolleyes

Oi, Possu, there is a difference between tailending and tailgating!
603137317_nbY4p-L.jpg

We were all pretty knackered at the end of the day but Dr JM was still smiling...
603137607_nbVMk-XL.jpg

... and my favourite off road god even had enough energy left...
603137936_gZVTA-L.jpg

Thanks everybody for your company on a great day out! I look forward to our next expedition - there are still plenty of trails to explore. :thumb2

And here's to Clive for a speedy recovery. Get better soon, mate - you need that wrist!

Cracking write-up, as ever, Ela :thumb2

Really enjoyed that (and watching you whizz round the A40 roundabout the other morning) :D

superb trip and photos...
i wonder if i could / should ride this on my wife's F650????
i guess the Ridgeway should be ok?

nice to see you celebrate your achievements with a proper Weissbier!:beerjug:

thx Lars

Looks like you had a great day.....excellent
Sorry to hear about your wrist Clive..... heal well

Excellent write-up and as always a great job leading and breaking trail. I'm always amazed that you are able to take such great pictures while riding (well, I assume that mostly you're stopped when actually pressing the shutter...)

It was a great day, with the first well graded tracks nice and easy to get into the swing of it. Some of the later trails were not GS-able as the GS's would be just too wide for the ruts, and even some nice climbs too.

I did 110 miles from door to door, probably around 50 or so off road. We met at 10am and were back home by about 5.30, so it was very civilised.

Fab photos & write up...as always. Great route choices, challenging enough to be interesting but not so challenging that (as a newbie to this stuff) I was terrified all the time!

Quite pleased Possu's video wasnt working though......:augie

Jane coming off in front of me, splatting the ground hard & rolling over would have made great You Tube material. :D There's always next time...... :augie

Thanks to Ela for leading the way. :thumb

Great photos & write up as always looked like a top day on the trail :thumb

Hope your wrist does not hurt to much and mends fast Clive :beerjug: look forwards to a Weissbier or two with you again (think thats white beer )

Louis
