Seen at the 'Royal Highland Show'.
Its a Rokon; made in the USA where there are reputedly thousands of them. They are also used by various Armed Forces for patrolling borders and so on.
The engine is a Kohler of around 160cc. Drive is via shaft to both ends where there is a transverse gearbox with a sprocket on one end and a disk brake on the other. There is (naturally) a UJ at the steering head.
Transmission has (if I recall correctly) four preset ratios ranging from crawl to road speed (top whack is 40mph). It is not possible to change ratios on the move - rather like a pre-80's tractor.
It will pull over 1 ton and with the balloon tyres will actually float. It weighs 90kilos.
The 'Trail Breaker' model has solid wheels that can hold additional fuel or water.
Suspension is via the balloon tyres (or chain tension would be interesting).
Cost = a little over £4,000.
Its popular with hill farmers as it is safer on steep slopes than a quad. It can also cross marshy ground.
It looked interesting to me (but I am not about to buy one - nor am I trying to sell them
).
Has anyone had any experience of one out of curiousity ?
Bob.
