Tyre Change

I went through a similar dilemma did a lot of research and ordered TA 2s to be fitted at the 6000 mile service, just before our first trip to the Picos. On the day of the service the supplier failed to deliver and so for that at various other reasons I went with Tourance Nexts as they were the only tyre in stock, I was told that they were being fitted to tour company bikes. So far I have done nearly 3000 miles on them and are still pleased with them. The rear is showing signs of squaring off, but performance seems unaffected. I never go off road, but equally don't want to feel I could ride round a gravel car park. I had PR4s on previous bikes and suffered from punctures, maybe unlucky but it seems to be a regular occurrence with them.

Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2s.

I'm thinking of these for my next set, what do you think of them. I've had 2 sets of the Avon trailrider which have been brilliant but just fancy a change.

I just returned from Andalusia and have now done 3.5k miles on the Pirellis. Absolutely brilliant in the wet and dry, and I've run them to the edges. Everyone else on this thread recommending tyres that are 3-4 years old and are objectively rated 3rd or 4th at best in tyre comparison tests by Motorrad. The Pirelli Scorpion 2 (make sure it is the 2nd version) is the #1 rated road-biased adventure tyre available.

But at the end of the day, it also depends on how hard a rider pushes their tyres. If it is just about riding upright and rolling along for distance, then anything round and black will do.

Loved the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2, fantastic grip but the front wore very strangely from about half way through its life...........in saying that, it wouldn't stop me using them again.

Decided on the PR 4's in the end. Bought them online, posted to me next day and then Williams Manchester fitted. More expensive in the long run, but I get the bike back quicker and I'm desperate to get a ride in during the holiday before I'm back to commuting daily next week. Anyway, back on the road this afternoon and very disappointed. Bike feels wrong. Vibrating like mad under my arse when braking hard, horrible drone between 20mph and 50mph which is louder than the engine and to top it all off the rear now looks like it's going down slowly. Hopefully just a valve issue. What a pain in the arse. Never easy. Back to Williams in the morning...

Conti TA2 gives me the longest life, great handling, and the rear doesn't square off like Anakee 3's tend to.

PR4s are really really shit. I honestly don't know why people declare they like them so much. Compared to any performance tyre, they are woefully poor in terms of feel, response, and grip.

Personally I don't find TA2's to be scary on wet pavement at all, certainly no different than Anakee 3 in that regard. But they offer much better mileage and handling over the tyres life. That's just my experience though.

Yes but they aren't a performance tyre, they are a touring tyre and marketed as such. They are pretty decent for the type of tyre they are.

My S1000R has Rosso III's on it and of course they are much better than the PR4's I have on my GS.

PR4's are good enough but I will try Roadtec 01 next

The tyre thread again. Hopefully those who swear by whatever brand or type of tyre or declare another to be utterly shit has hopefully by now concluded that all tyres are round and you buy what suits the budget or what you like or what suits your needs regardless of what the twat next door thinks. I seriously doubt that there are riding gods on here with the skill and experience to determine the characteristics of one tyre to the next in a blind test. All opinions of course are considered before deciding it is all bollocks. Have a nice day.

There's a few on the XR forum that have fitted PR4's to their bikes. Crazy.

It's about feel and handling, less so grip. Rosso3s will tour perfectly well (I toured 2k miles on them earlier this year to Portugal on my Ducati) with good feedback and grip in both the wet and dry.

However - PR4s (and even worse the PR3s before) are wobbly, unstable, and deny the rider any proper feel of the road when leant over. Critical thing with tyres is about providing feel and feedback to the rider in any road condition at pace. The PR4 are woeful when leant over and do not provide good feedback because of the wobbly outer carcass. They do not offer as much chemical grip as other tyres available. Physical grip is below average in the dry, although reasonable in the wet. In short, there are better tyres out there. YMMV.

Of course, if touring tyre = ride bolt upright for 10k miles, then I can see why people like the PR4. But then again, any tyre as long as it is black and round will do in that case...
