Ok - my contribution to the other tyre post has raised a little interest, and at risk of making a complete dick of myself I'm happy to organise a morning's hilarity with a couple of wheels tyres and tubes - and a puncture repair kit!

I'm in Wimborne and have plenty of space (and a compressor!) in the garage if the weather's shite, so if anyone's interested then just stick your name down.

It's looking like the middle of Feb if anyone's hardy enough ..

Cheers

Greg

I'm interested - I've not had much luck with those puncture kits that need a 'knack'.

Assuming it's the Wimbourne in Dorset?

Yaah...

Doing tyres is one of those 'funny' things, sometimes they just slip on like a well lubed prophylactic, yet other times they can be the subbornest b!tch.

I remember watching a guy doing a demonstration at Ripley a couple of years ago - he had an old rim and a nice soft walled and warm trials tyre (or similar) and the thing just plopped on with barely any effort from the levers... I've had some proper screamers where I've thought that the tyre's the wrong size, or I'm about to bend a lever... but I still remain convinced that there is some variation in size that will and can sometimes make a huge difference to the ease with which the tyre will mount...

When I fixed my last puncture though, the 'Wing co-operated quite nicely...

As I said, I'll whip the wheels off my Katoom for folks to have a go at, and I'll also tick either the Heidis or my TKCs on the 800 wheels too...

DYO Maintenance Clinic ...

Ok - here's a thought...

There have been a few postings/threads recently on the subject of basic maintenance. For anyone who isn't mechanically inclined, this can be a bit of a headache, but it doesn't need to be!

I'm a reasonably competent spanner twirler and am very happy to put together a day's workshop to cover some basic maintenance and mechanic skills, or preparation for an overland trip.

If anyone's interested just drop me a pm and I'll see what I can do to put something together.

I've been thinking of doing something similar on my website.

http://www.everywherevirtually.co.uk/maintenance-bmw-f800-gs/

Some of the projects have only photographed. The odd one I had video'd and some were video'd out on the road using rudimentary tools.

If anyone wants to make any suggestions or add their own content then feel free to get I touch

Cheers

Greggers, I'm up for that.

Jon, I'll keep an eye on your youtube account.

Greg, i've got enough digital camera's to make a movie ;) ..and not that sort!

I think that sometimes it is easy to just to get on and ride your bike with the backup of the breakdown truck, but I also believe that the more you know and understand about you bike the better rider you can become.

If their is someone as generous as yourself who is able to impart even a small amount of positive information for me to understanding my bike a little more, which in turn makes me a better rider, then I am all for it.

You can count me in. Where, when and what do you want me to bring. Coffee, donuts, a complete lack of knowledge but a willingness to learn. :thumb

Cheers

Nice one greggers, I'm a fair old slog away from you put might be worth a day out, I look forward to hearing more about this :-)

Sounds like a good idea, I currently have knobbly tyres in the post to me and have just bought tyre levers. I'm going to be in Poole over the last weekend in Feb if that weekend works and would spare a chunk of a day to come over. Basic mechanics would be good too. Used to spanner my own bikes and doing stuff on the GS is part of the plan.

Silcon grease was my best friend when I fitted Heidenau's to my 800 rims. Never done it before, and I found the grease plus 15" tyre levers did the trick. I also covered the inner tube in grease, as I have heard that at high road speeds friction between the tube and tyre can cause overheating.

After 4000 miles with no ill effects, all I can say is the grease hasn't made bad things happen. :)

Tyre lube

Depending on what's to hand... I have some proper tyre 'soap' which is good, I've used shower gel which smells lovely, washing-up liquid which works a treat but is a REAL NO-NO on account of the salt content not agreeing with alloy rims, at a push you can use that alcohol hand-rubbing stuff or what does work quite well and does no harm is WD40 ... assuming you keep it clear of the brake disc :toungincheek

Hi Gregg,

Sterling job lad. What started out as a 2 up demo has now turned into a full day tyre change and mechanical know how class for the masses.

Good on you M8, you can count me in from 13th / 14th or 27th / 28th Feb. would be good for me.

Look forward to a confirmed date and address etc.

Cheers, :thumb
