Is it a bad idea to mix tyres on a GS ie continetal TKC`s on the back and michelin anakins on the front?

Never tried that combination. General rule is that as a minimum you put the stickier tyre on the front, for obvious reasons.

I had an 1100 with a trailwing on the front and a bridgestone 02 on the rear.

Felt the same as any other combination

The reason i asked is because i had a wee off on boxing day and noticed that the front tyre had a couple of cuts in the tyre wall, where the bike hit the crash barrier support, as i had the TKCs put on a few weeks before and kept the michelins to put back on in the drier weather, I changed the damaged TKC for a michelin I already have, but do i need to put the michelin on the back aswell or will the knobbly be ok on the back?

I get the impression from tyre fitters that the only reason that mixing tyres is frowned upon, is that all the possible variations of tyres have not been tested. So it is safer for them & tyre manufactures to simply state that tyres must be matched.

Much like Steptoe, I have run a Tourance rear, with a Bridgestone front. Couldn't tell any difference in the ride at all.

I had a tourance on the front and a bald 180 tomahalk remould on the back (cast wheel). Never noticed any difference in the handling.

Wouldn't Mix Road Tyre With Knobbly???

Hi Dave
I don't think mixing brands is much of a problem usually BUT I think mixing a road-biased tyre (Anakee, Tourance, Trailwing etc) with a knobbly TKC might be asking for trouble??? - especially after an off:( I would want to get the bike back on the road on a pair of tyres I "know" - in this case Anakee's, so that you can be sure everything feels straight and back to normal??
I would have thought the Anakee's were a better bet most of the winter anyway?? - TKC's are not really famed for grip on wet/greasy winter roads? - much better in slush/snow though:eek:
I'm sure someone will think otherwise - but that's my tuppence-worth!!

Cheers......................Grizzly:beer:

I have a tourance on the back and a battlewing on the front and have found no problems:theclub
