My new (to me) 1200GSA like many others is equipped with tyre pressure monitors. However I'm not a lover of the wire wheels (especialy cleaning them) and I do no off road riding, so today I have managed to pick up a pair of alloy wheels which I plan to fit instead.

Swapping over the brake discs and ABS ring etc... doesn't present any issues and I've also got the longer securing bolts for the rear wheel, but I don't know if I can swap over the tyre pressure monitors from the wires wheels to the alloys?

Has anyone done this or do I need to buy a new pair (about £150 for two I'm told ) Personally I'm not that bothered about having the monitors so what happens if I run the alloy wheels with standard valves? Will the dash reading just be blank on the pressure readings or will it go crazy thinking both tyres are flat?

I'd appreciate anyones experiences before I get busy with the spanners :D

Tyre pressure monitors

All that will happen, is you get the warning triangle and no reading on the tyre pressure screen if you dont fit them

Falco9,
My understanding is that the monitors can be switch between spoked and cast rims, as you say the only issue is the bolt length for rear wheel fitting.
As for your spoked wheels, are you looking to sell those? If so any photos? what's the condiition?
PM me if you like......

Appreciate all your comments,

I'm not planning on selling the wire wheels as I also think selling a GSA without the wire wheels would be difficult.

I got the alloys for a great price, so luckily I don't need to sell to finance the swap

Never dealt with these tyre pressure monitors before but I'm hoping they are a straight forward swap from wire wheel to alloy as I don't fancy paying out £150 for two of them (which I wouldn't)

You would need to get them setup again if you moved them to a different bike but not wheels so long as you keep front to front and back to back. Just checked here http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51558&rnd=03252011 and they are the same part number so will fit either cast or spoked wheel

Cheers Marki, appreciate you looking into this for me. Sounds like good news, I was hoping that provided the sensors stayed the same (front to front etc..) they wouldn't need re-coding. I just hope they are an easy swap as I understand they are very easy to damage.........I'll report back once the swap is done to let others know the outcome
