I had the dubious delight of tryin out Beemers tyre repair kit last sunday night...... I was on my way to work @ 10.30 pm, half way through Bristol I started to get that " ridin on a jelly" feeling. A quick check of my tyres showed that I must have run over some glass ( there were 3 or 4 cuts across the back tyre) one of which was rapidly letin out what was left of its air!
I managed to ride a mile or so untill i reached a garage that was open. with the intention of buying one of those aerosol cans that would allow me to get to work and hopefully home in the morning,............. no chance, everthing but food, fags, booze, bar b Q's etc, So i had to resort to the repair kit .............. three broken inserts later!!! I gave up, bodged as much of the glue as I could into the cut, put 20 pence worth of air in the tyre and rode like a i'd stole the bike to the next garage for another 20 pence worth which got me to work.... just .
later during the night I managed to find a 24 hr garage that sold the aersol cans. So I rode to Protyre on the way home and they fitted a new tyre. ( the fitter said they wouldn't have repaired it any way cos I had used that foam stuff?)

What I would like to know have any of you used the "string" type inserts to fix a puncture and are they any easier to use?
If you have where have you got them from? On the web there are loads in the USA but Iv'e not seen any for sale here in the UK

I've used the aerosol style repair, and not found it to be much good. In my case it was get you home (butonly just.

I've used the BM kit, and found that you need patience, so that you prepare the hole first, (I know it's not a big job, but if you're under pressure / stressed/ pissed off you will rush it), then use lots of glue, and as was necessary in my case 2 of the plugs to fill the gap (it was a big hole). Then the kit was good enough to get me to a filling station to pick up some more air. The repair seemed like it would have gone much further, but I only needed to ride 80miles to get to the tyre fitter.

Cheers

Plug it !

Tyre Plug .
Stringy, sticky , fits on a Screw driver like, Darnin Needle type
thing. Stick it into the hole and cut off excess.
Has Never let me Down.
Any tyre dealer should have the Kit to sell.

stop n go

I just bought a stop n go repair outfit. Has a gun type thing that fires a mushroom into the tyre. I have not used it yet but it seems the business. I looked for an alternative as the Beema one was useless.

I have seen a BMW type system used by a gser called slimbo AKA Graham (he's an AA chap) it was what he had on board of his van he repaired an absolutley shagged out back tyre on a plastic rocket and I thought that never gonna work but... it did, can't remeber the name maybe it's worth sending him a PM. Also Hein Gerricke (spelling?) do a string type kit I had one on a Jap bike but again never used it, but they do stock them.

String

Is the way.

I tried all the types mentioned on an old tyre with a variety of objects \ hole sizes

BMW kit - fekkin useless

Stop n Go kit - better, but it took a lot of goes to get it right . I didn't try the fancy gun kit just the regular manual one. The only good thing about this kit is the quality of the reamer - I carry this in preference to the one which came with the String kit.

String - worked every time. A useful bonus is being able to adjust the size of the "plug" by doubling the string.

I think it pays to have a few trial runs on an old tyre before you're trying to do it on the side of the road pissed off and inevitably wet through.

I got my string kit gratis off a guy on ADVRider, along with another Brit, after we complained about not being able to find string based kits in the UK.

If anyone knows where to get these in the UK let us know.

Plugs do work but you need to ream out the hole first.

Whilst you are doing this leave the plug on the cyclinder or somewhere it will warm up (but not melt). Cos if it aint warm and pliable it'll tear when you try and insert it.

You only need to spread glue over the end thats being pushed in. The glue gets wiped and pushed over the tyre hole as its inserted. You do not need to smother the whole plug in glue.

Carry a couple of self tapping screws. You can normally screw these into a hole and they will hold to get you home or from garage to garage.

If you do have a nail in your tyre, leave it in. Pulling it out unplugs the hole and lets the air escape quicker. As obvious as that is, you'd be amazed at how many people pull out the puncturing object and get themselves stranded.:P

Good call.
Give yourself a couple of options.

Half way round the coast of Scotland, (no garages for miles) mate ran over a screw that gave the tyre a slow puncture. We tried to screw it in as there was still air left in it with no luck. Ended up using the BMW plug kit and inflated the tyre with 3 of the small canisters provided to get him to the nearest garage. Very easy to use and is still fine 1200 miles later.

It has been rigorously tested and is specially formulated for use within tyres, increasing top speed and extending tyre life.
The free stuff aint worth the money it costs to put in.
