Tyres for road not dual use

What did i ever do to you?
New on this site new to adventure bikes most have made me feel welcome you sir are an ass of the highest order

In fairness to the lad tyres have developed and continue to do so

Manufacturers bring out new and improved tyres and bods need to know what they are like in the real world before making a decision

I've got pr4's on four of my bikes; warm up quickly, give good feedback and great in the wet.

No I don't work for Michelin, just look like bibi.

The difficulty is do you spend £250 then find out you don't like "feel" ?

Thanks i want a tyre thats give you feel .
Ive had harder tyres ie longer lasting on my sports bikesbut prefer a less hard wearing sticky tyre as feel more confident
Hope that makes sense

I know it's subjective but I loved the feel of the PR4s I had on my last bike, very flickable and the grip was excellent dry or wet

Only reservations I had was that they would occasionally white line a bit in the wet and I got a puncture in the rear before I got home from the tyre fitters (11km)

Maybe I was just unlucky as they were fine after that but a lot of folks do seem to think they are puncture prone

As said above, tyre technology moves on and there are some newer models out there now,

I will probably try Roadtec 01s next if my OEM Anakees ever wear out so I'm waiting for folks experience with them

The Roadtec 01 on my XR are simpy brilliant

They handle the considerable extra BHP over the GS with ease and are lasting way longer than i expected on the XR and certainly longer than the Rosso 3s that they replaced

They came top in blind testing whereas the PR4 came 4th in the same test

Yes punctures seem a common theme only had one in 19 years of riding been lucky
It is a personal experience tyres but I heard good things about the pr4 but now new tyres out there so wanted to know if game head moved on lots or better off sticking to a "trusted " tyre

I'm leaning towards Scorpion 2s or Conti trail 2s. We don't get a lot of rain down here, so the grip in the wet is not as important as it is in the UK. It's only rained once since May, and that was at night. You are correct, tyres as in most things keep evolving, so you need to ask questions to help arrive at what is best for you.

Welcome to the site, lot of information here......:beerjug:

P.S My daughter is coming out for a week soon. It's always guaranteed to P!$$ it down when she comes.

Tyres are subjective and there are newer models now but 2 or 3 years ago the PR4 was pretty much a no brainer

So if you do go for them I'm sure you will not regret it, don't know if they are the best or not but either way they are excellent tyres

Ditto on the A40's, pal and i had these fitted 150 quid for the pair and rode to Corsica on GS and GSA , had such fun on the many twisties .they stuck well wet or dry and loads less noise than Anakee which will never be back on my cickle.

I have recently bought a new 1200GS and for the life of me cannot hear the noise mentioned off the Michelin Anakees. What does it sound like? I came off a R1200RT and hear more engine noise on the GS but that is it. I would be replacing the OE tyres in April 2017 with probably PR4s.

Just curious.

+1.

If someone thinks that a subject has been covered then they don't need to comment so aggressively especially when someone is new to the UKGSer site and the style of bikes.

I agree I don't know what noise people complain about.

My OEM A3s were noisy on smooth tarmac. As there isn't a lot of that on roads I ride it was just an occasional irritant. They are long gone now and not that much missed.

I totally agree

PR4's came 6th out of 6 in this test..... https://youtu.be/EzcgeHLZMvw?t=3m46s

To be absolutely honest, I used to love PR4's on my GSA LC but after watching this video, I took the plunge and got some Roadtec 01's.

It's the best thing I have done to my bike. The profile is much better, they are quieter, more comfortable, give my bike a sporty feel, wear better, no punctures (yet) and they stick like shit to a blanket unlike the mushy feel of PR4's.

My recommendation would be to stop wasting your time with PR4's and go for Roadtec 01's. I don't know how Metzeler did it but I believe they are a country mile ahead of Michelin.

Just done 1000 miles on Roadtec 01's after 4 sets of PR4's. PR's were good but are now a couple of years old.

I also saw the Motorrad Magazine test which put the 01's best ahead of Roadsmart 3's, Road Attack 2 evo,s and PR4's.

I think it comes down to evolution. 01's are newer than PR4's and will no doubt have been tested against all its rivals during development. For me I prefer the 01's and won't go back to PR4's. I have ridden them fast around twisty Scottish highland roads in the dry but also experienced torrential downpours coz after all it was Scotland!! Now in the wet I don't even think about the tyres.

I don't know many new tyres that are worse than other older ones. Tyre development has been one of the biggest improvements in motorcycling for me in the last 10 years. Hope it continues.

Forgot to mention that I would never have chosen Metzelers in the past as previous ones like Mez 1's just didn't do it for me. Definitely a convert now.

I travelled down through France in May this year and had a day and a half of torrential rain. i was on the RT using Pr4s as was my brother on a RT LC. The tyres performed brilliantly. Superb on the wet semi flooded roads at speed. When following the Bro I remarked to myself how deeply the tyres cut through the standing water. When we stopped for coffee my Bro said he has made the same observation when behind me. When the rain stopped and the sun came out the PR4s again performed brilliantly on Italian back road in high temperatures on fully loaded bikes.

I should point out that I ride solo just me but.......I am 6"2" and 22 stone so would give any tyre a good work out.;)

I am a firm believer in the adage that tyres are in our heads. If they feel right then they are.

The OP needs to pick through some good advise given above and try and make up his own mind.

On a lighter note i was away a few years ago in France with a group of friends and we were sitting having an after dinner drink and the subject of tyres came up. As here everyone had their favourite my brother said he had alway ridden Metzeler tyres as they were the best and the trip so far was reinforcing his opinion. Next day I was packing the bike to leave the hotel when i noticed something about the brother's bike and called him over. he had a look at the make on his new BMW RT and they were Michelins...... OOOps. Of course nobody mention this stunning fact to him again.:aidan:beerjug:
