I'm fairly new at "GS riding" and am loving it!
Though I'm a little surprised at how quickly the rear will lock up when testing it on the country lanes. I've got BT020's on it at the mo with about 6mths tread left to go.

Is there a much better tyre for all winter riding on UK B roads?

I guess I'm too used to the bit fat Avon Storm on the rear of my Blackbird which doesn't lock up much at all?

cheers

I use Conti Trail Attacks and luv em!!

It's difficult to beat a set of Metzeler Tourances on a GS.Good grip and mileage.:thumb2
Locking up rear wheel;do you not have ABS?.

I have, but since a pressure wash on Sunday it hasn't been working the last few days....waiting for something to dry out.....if not will have a look at the weekend.

I went on a Rider Skills Day last year where they got you locking up on front and rear at 30mph+. Good exp and gave me a much better feel for the lock point which I test every now and then on different surfaces in winter, just so I know. Blackbird stuck amazingly well, GS feels a lot less forgiving.

Just wondered if I could improve on the tyre? Must admit I do like the look of those Tourances...:thumb2

Wet grip and handling wise the Bridgestones are up there with the best. Nothing that fits a GS will make a significant difference IMHO.

Unless of cousre you fancy something like these, mileage might be an issue though :thumb

The advice from everywhere is 'never pressure wash a bike' not just bmw.

btw - I have bt020s on my bike and love them compared to those nasty Tourance wotsits.... Tourances might be ok for a ride to Praha and back via Roma... but to be honest I hated them... and from what I've read the newer versions are the same only worserer...

when these have worn out.. then maybe the contis... or road pilots. I fully expect these tyres to do me well over this winter... and I do a lot of B roads! - aren't B roads what this bike was made for?

Washing

Every BM dealer has a pressure washer in the washing bay, you will find the back locks up easily in the wet on any tyre, don't change down to low ratios too quick without a blip on the throttle.

If this sweeping statement is true.. which I doubt - then you can be sure the staff who use it will be VERY careful where they direct the water...

Thats assuming they even use them on the bikes.

you only have to watch this forum for a few weeks to see how many problems have been caused by jetwashing - water being forced into areas of the bike that under normal circumstances would never get flooded.

Have used plenty of Metz Tourance and there fantastic especialy on slimey winter back roads covered in fallen leaves and muck, used with more confidence more than I've had on road tyres. Allthough I've just put a set of Michelin Anakee 2 on and they seem every bit as good just don't know about the mileage yet.

I reguarly use a pressue washer on all my bikes without worry. Just dont aim it at delicate stuff really... thats about the only advice, i.e into bearings or electrical equipment. Its surprising just how much pressure the water is under.... i.e a frickin lot

I managed to take off the paint off my fathers car when i washed it for him..."shhhh dont tell him... he doesnt know to this day!"

Go for the trail attacks if you want something more sticky. Tourances are good all rounders but so far my trail attacks have been frankly amazing and have really moved the goalposts as far as im concerned.

Ebay sellers "thetyreguys" or "roundandblack" do some good deals £150 for the pair.

I can get my pegs down now in the damp on my klv1000 with these puppys on... despite it being jacked up to buggery.

Work fine on grass and stuff if you go camping.. .just dont try taking it offroad... theyre bloody useless... there a road tyre and thats what theyre good at.

+1, love em. Had them on 1100, 1150 and 1200. Others may be as good or even better but I can't tear myself away from them:thumb2
