Any linux networkers out there? I'm trying to SSH into my home linux server using the Putty programme on a Windows XP machine outside on the net. I've got port 22 forwarded on my router and looking at the Putty and server logs the two machines appear to acknowledge passwords etc but then the Putty programme hangs. Doing the same thing on my internal LAN works OK though and I can see the server command line via Putty. I'm stumped and would appreciate any pointers.

Did you put enough putty in your windows? Have a look behind your .Net curtains to check.

Never used the Ubuntu distro, but is the account you're using allowed to log in over ssh?

There's got to be loads and loads of 'HOWTO's' on the ubuntu forums on getting this working.

And I'm not sure I'd have an SSH server on port 22 on the net - it'll attract a lot of unwanted attention. Changing it to something very different removed any unknown login attempts on my boxes.

Thanks for the ideas Slowdown. In the end Putty drove me potty so I tried a programme called Tunnelier and that connected straight away so it looks like it's a client prograsmme setup problem rather than anything at the server end. I'll have to go through the two client programmes comparing settings.

I would like to change away from port 22 but AFAIK it's one of the few that my company firewall has open so I may not have any option as that's where I want to use the client from. At least on my firewall I've only got port 22 open for a couple of known IP addresses.
