UK 1100 GS and Techlusion 1031

Well I have hactually m8 :)

Finally got a reply from Techlusion :bow

Went like this...

I recently bought a Tfi 1031 second hand and was wondering where the instructions are to fit this unit to my 1999 R1100GS. The instructions that came with the unit are for a 1030 I believe.

I have looked for the oxygen sensor to disconnect and it appears my bike does not have one.

Any information regarding the above would be great.

The 1030 and 1031 control units are identical. The 1031 uses OEM connectors instead of being a tap in, as was the 1030. The 1031 interrupts the left injector lead. Depress the wire bail on the injector connector and unplug the lead from the injector. Install the 1031 connectors to the injector and the bikes wiring harness. Connect the ground to the ground screw on the bottom of the left throttle body. The base setup is the same as the 1030 and are in the instructions - the first post in the BMW forum.
Your bike should have an O2 sensor. It should be in the pre muffler, right side, near where the headpipe junction is. It has 4 wires in black conduit. The wire colors are 2 whites, a black and a grey. It has a large connector with a threaded lock. The connector should be cable tied to the right steering head frame brace under the tank.

Thanks for that information. I'll have a further look for the oxygen sensor.

One more question. Do I need to reset the Motronic after every change made with the 1031? By this I mean taking out fuse five for a few minutes, replacing it and after switching on the ignition open the throttle fully two or three times.

No. The only time a reset is required is after a hardware configuration change. Cat code plug, TPS adjustment, etc.

Thanks Chris.

Right, I've been all over this bike (bog standard 1999 R1100GS bought second hand from main UK dealer) and I simply cannot find any oxygen sensor. I have been told that no UK 1100's have oxygen sensors. If this is the case do I simply fit the 1031 as if I have disconnected the oxygen sensor.

Sorry, I thought you had a US spec bike. The controller should work fine for this application. I'll take a stab at a base setup if you can give me more info...
What is the current fuel consumption?
Does the bike exhibit any problems at idle, fixed throttle cruise, light or heavy accel etc?

Hi Chris.

The bike used to surge terribly at low speeds on a steady throttle, especially when doing about 20 mph or less and was murder in heavy traffic when I had to slip the clutch a lot while filtering etc. I then removed the CCP and this seemed to cure the behaviour. I was never happy with the CCP removed as I heard this richens the mixture a fair bit and might lead to bore wear. This was the main reason I bought the 1031.

I have since replaced the CCP, reset the Motronic and strangely the surging seems less prevalent now. It now seems a bit weak/low on power from 3000 rpm to 5000 rpm when I get a slight boost in power.

So basically I have a totally standard bike, standard exhaust and air filter, now with no or very little surging at very low speeds and would like a bit more mid range torque.

I mainly use the bike for long distance touring and the fuel consumption works out at about 40ish mpg (was hoping for 45+). I have never kept watch on overall consumption. I get a bit uneasy when working out fuel costs in the UK when basic unleaded costs nearly £1 litre or $1.8 litre :(

I also stay in Scotland so the weather is mainly cool and damp.

One more question. The previous owner has cut the earth wire quite short and I was wondering if I could attatch the 1031 earth to the battery earth/negative rather than the throttle body as the unit will be sitting directly behind the battery.

Thanks again.

John

Start with the base setup in the instructions. You should try adjusting the green lower. Add just enough green fuel to get the bike to cruise properly. Once the green is set, try doing the same with the yellow and red. These two are the perfomance fuel adds and can wreak havoc on your MPG. Grounding the unit to the battery is OK.

I've only one more question left to ask, about the RPM pot, then I'm actually going to fit the bl@@dy thing :moped: :D :D
