Uk & EU Breakdown cover for bikes close to 20 years old

Things to look for, as well as the age of the bike;

Will they recover your bike back to the UK if it can’t be fixed?

Will they recover your bike back to the UK if you are ill/injured and can’t ride it home?

This from FIM https://fim-advantage.com/compare/

With one main stipulation "Insured trips Any trip undertaken more than 100 km from your home with the insured vehicle, including at least one night's accommodation."
So they wouldn't cover you for a day trip to France. Nor for a tour of coastal northern France if you lived near Folkestone (probably) even if it included an overnight stop. Strange stipulations.

Well depends on how far you travelled - long way round - to your accommodation from your house!

i had the same issue with my 02 1150...Barclays ,Nationwide all offer a policy for £12.50 if you have a current account. Its also travel insurance. And breakdown cover in any vehicle in UK and EU. Job done

I’ve insured my 4 x GS’s with footman-james on a classic multi bike policy which includes full European breakdown cover and is unlimited mileage, with no age limitations etc, it’s a really good policy

Autoaid offer breakdown which can be extended for an older bike for about £10 and extended to euro cover with their sister company.
Looks like Autoaid's sister company only cover up to 15 year old vehicles-

*Eligible vehicles: UK vehicles only, Saloon cars, hatchbacks, estate cars, MPV's and motorcycles all less than 10 years old. Cover may be extended to a 15 year age Limit provided an extra premium is paid. Cover is restricted to a maximum of 4 passengers and the driver.

I've been following this thread as I'm in a similar position - a 2001 GS that I plan to take overseas.

It's insurance renewal time for me.

I can get a basic (no added extras) policy for ~ £170, or a policy with Bikesure that includes breakdown cover AND overseas riding for ~ £290.

I've just checked the associated 'Flux Rescue' (aka Bikesure) policy and can't see any restrictions about vehicle age.

So about £120 for breakdown cover - how does that compare?
Any bike older than 15 years can be insured as a classic. Most classic policies include breakdown cover. Contact Peter James in Brum for a quote. Then shop around. Other brokers are available.

I'm with Peter James classic insurance and basic UK / Euro breakdown with the policy so anything 20yrs should be cheaper and covered.

I've just run a quote online - there is a 10,000 mile limit and the euro breakdown was another ~£100 on top of the hefty premium (£360). Did you phone them for your cover?

Does your bike insurer offer breakdown cover as an add on?

Nationwide bank account https://www.nationwide.co.uk/current-accounts/flexplus/ £13 a month includes breakdown, phone and travel insurance. Often the most cost effective way for older vehicles and families with multiple vehicles. The additional premiums for medical stuff on the travel insurance are not cheap.
This is a good account, and there are no age limits on the vehicle that I can find. However, the travel insurance element restricts cover to riding motorcycles up to 125cc (as so many do) so it is not a 1-stop solution for foreign motorcycle travel.

it does cover you for over 125cc if it is your own bike and used to travel from home in the current UK General Insurance T&C

the 125cc exclusion is for "activities" such as hiring a bike

I believe the underwriter changes soon and the 125cc limit will be removed - there's a thread on it here somewhere

Have a look at rescuemycar.com. They appear to cover vehicles up to 50 years old. We have a personal policy meaning it cover me and Magnet for a range of vehicles, cars and bikes.

I just did a quote, great value for the UK cover but didn't like it when I added the European cover. It says I need to call them which I'll do tomorrow;-)

Was it on a classic bike policy? It’s odd they won’t sell it to you but they did sell it to me and 3 out of 4 of my bikes are 20+ years old

I may have quoted the wrong entry here, it's breakdown cover from rescuemycar.com that got refused due to the age of they bike.
On my phone, fat thumbs😁

A good point; my insurance tried to avoid recovering my bike back to the UK from Portugal after I'd already been flown back; in essence saying 'your bike is fixed and ready to collect'. (Sure, that must be fine, I can just nip to Portugal in my lunch hour and get it). They were attempting to make an argument that the bike wasn't worth bringing back and took a pretty unfair approach. They did change their mind and bring it back, so happy ending, but as ever check the wording carefully..
