UK to Portugal via France & Spain December/January advice

Hi, First day was short due to getting off the ferry in cherbourg at 7pm. we stayed near LeMans.

Next morning was 0.1c on the BMW guage. Progress was rapid until about
150kl from Claremount Ferrand, then it go really bad and started to snow. This was a dodgy situation no joke. The motorway lane was clear in the traffic flow. but the snow had blocked the hard shoulder and any exits. I had to get off and i could only get 50 yards and had to abandon the bike as best I could. We were in a s--t hole of a French town at 5pm in a crap hotel (there was a lot of messing in the snow) We had 6" if snow in less than 2 hours and we were stuck nothing open we could not even buy a bottle of water let alone a meal. bugger all in the hotel not even a TV or a cup of coffee.
We were 80kl from Claremount Farrand with no plan B. The only information we got was from Shenzi, was calling me regular and keeping me updated and my spirits up.

Next day looked bad I rescued the bike and made it back onto the motorway, this was not easy.
I rode at 50kph with the 4X flashers on until we got as far a Issaore. All looked well and we pegged it up a bit temp was 0.0.
We had freezing fog all the way but this got really bad after Issaore we were going into high altitude and it was not good, the cars did not give a f--k and was flying past. It´s luck it did not start snowing again if it did we were buggered.
Things improved after we started to decend a bit, our target was Millau Viaduct we passed every car that passed us out. I went over the Viaduct at 120mph It was quite emotional.
I pressed on to the second service station and stayed there that night. It was a good stop.
Next morning was still snow and -0.5c but in 15mins we were decending and the snow was gone.
Next thing was high winds for 100kl not nice.
After a lunch break I put the boot down all the way to Torrevieja, this was fast and fun.
Next day it was another high speed run to Marbella we took the Autopista so it was back into a slowy landscape but no problem.
It it nice here 19c today.
The cold we encountered was not an issue, we just had normal winter riding gear. The GT is a warm bike anyway.
The bike 07 K1200GT is without peers for this kind of work, it has earned my resect.
I would not recomend this trip to anyone, there is a real risk to life and limb, if you get cought on the motorway in the snow you cannot get off or use the hard shoulder. You cannot get a road bike 10 feet in snow, and slush is worse.
We rode 600kl with the ice warning on, 200 of those with the 4X flashers on.
I will post some pictures when I get sorted.

Oh dear that doesnt sound good Pat

We leave tomorrow and arrive into France on Saturday at 8am. We are hoping to miss your experience and Shenzi has advised that so far the weather is holding out.

West coast would probably be worse once into Spain so looks like we will be following in your wake down central France then east coast of Spain, although hoping for no snow

Glad you arrived ok, and thanks for the update bud :thumb2

I tell you I would not like to do that again, the weather is a lottery.
Shenzi is the man, you will have to be guided by the weather, if the forcast is bad do not attempt to advance. The freezing fog was deadly and some cars were passing within 6ft of us, just being assholes.
I would not expect much help from anyone on the road.
The A75 is a great road if it is clear.
The weather in Madrid looked terrible on the news.
Good luck and dont take any chances.

Glad you and M arrived safe.Looking foward to those pics :thumb2

Realboss (and lovely wife!) just passed through. He had some fog on the way down but not the freezing variety. The weather is looking really good for the rest of his journey.

Great, I am glad they got through without issues.
This was one of our fuel stops, we could not get in to the pumps so we had to bring out the fuel in a jerry can.
It is great here in the Marbella, 20c and not a cloud in the sky.

Hi chaps,

Yep arrived safe in no small part due to Shenzi´s guidance :thumb As he mentioned the only bit of dodgy weather for us was between Clermont-Ferrand and Millau. We hit some quite heavy fog which we subsequently learned was actually cloud. However the snow on the side of the roads (which is what Pat mustve hit) was melting so we we ok in terms of good grip on the road. I did feel really sorry for Pat :tears having seen that snow first hand on the sides of the road. It must have been quite a scare. As soon as we were through the cloud/fog we hit sunshine and had that for the entire rest of the trip :Motomartin . Met Shenzi not far from Millau in a beautiful French village for a coffee and hot chocolate. Thoroughly nice bloke we are very grateful to have had him watching our backs for us. Had a nice blast with him to the motorway where we tooted like mad and parted company.

I agree with Pat there were some crazy drivers even going through the fog. I have a heavy duty horn fitted which I used when necessary and on Shenzis advice I kept my hazard lights on.

When we left Shenzi around 5pm we headed for Perignon and hit some really violent wind  which is common in this zone as it funnels down from the Pyrenees into the Med here. We stopped in Perignon the night and the next day we did 770 miles!! My missus was a trooper. She had her Ipod going all the way and was loving it! Weather was just so good though it was some of the best biking I have ever done. Morning was VERY cold though until we got about an hour past Barcelona and I wouldnt have been at all comfortable without our heated jacket liners and my muffs. Before anyone decries me as a wimp, please give it a try first without them!

We stopped an hour and a half from Cordoba and the next day had lunch in Seville before reaching Lagos in the Algarve yesterday. Again weather was stunning all the way nice and sunny with cool air perfect for biking. In Seville we were amongst throngs of other bikers at traffic lights and they were all waving and revving their engines like mad we loved it!

Thanks again Shenzi and all the rest of you chaps for advice and help. We are due to leave on the 2nd or 3rd Jan returning on two bikes but will see what the weather is like first as my missus is riding her own bike back. If the weather is looking ominous we may ditch the bikes here and come and pick em up in Feb or March when the weather breaks. The risk zone in my opinion is between Bourges and Millau. Just be prepared and try not to rush if you are heading this way.

My brother came via west coast by car and said Burgos and Vitoria were cold and wet but didnt hit major snow storms or ice. Dont know about wind etc though. Bear in mind he was in a car out of the elements - a biker might have said it was aweful.

Stay cool and ride carefully. We took it real steady and I made sure I didnt go over 80mph. It just isnt worth the risk when you are dealing with the forces of nature. Through the fog I slowed to 50-60 and stuck behind a slow driver with my hazards on. This allowed me to anticipate corners and gave better warning to approaching cars.

Finally, here´s wishing you a fabulous Christmas and New Year. Signing off for now but will post a message regards our potential return trip. Sorry no pictures as we were on a whirlwind ride. Best regards all!

Job done only Ogni to go, Sorry Ogni I thought you were in Malaga hence the call for directions. The sun is frying my brain.
We will be heading back up on the 3rd as well so we may be able to have a convoy, I am not sure of our return following the Portugal coast up is one option.

Some great deals on BMW gear in Marbella and Malaga BMW

Happy Chrismas to ye all and have a good drink you all deserve it.

No worries about the call, my ferry goes on the 26th from Dover,
after that the wheels will just have to keep turning.
Merry X-mas to ALL.
Ogni

Thanks for the kind words guys but to be honest I think you are all bonkers! :D A cloud in the sky is enough to put me off but I am a confirmed wuss!
Hats off to Mrs Realboss for contemplating riding her bike back! Gorgeous with guts, they don't come better than that!
Now I'm waiting for Ogni to pass through, hope it is going to be clear for him and not a nightmare like it was for Patzx12!

Planing my trip back now and no way am I returning the way I came mind you I would have liked to pick up the Arbus lock and chain I left behind in a hotel car park.
We came back yesterday Cartagena to Marbella on the coast road 18c and a nice mix of roads one of those perfect rides 300 miles in 4 hours.
I am going to head to Ronda, Jerez, Seville, Madrid, Burgos. Weather looks OK on Yahoo.
Not sure about ferry. I could get P&O from Bilbau - Portsmouth and Holyhead Dublin but I would prefer to wellie it up through France and hop a ferry to the UK. We always enjoy a visit to the UK, still one of the best countries in the world despite the doom and gloom.
The only direct ferry to Ireland is L&M next Friday.
Today is scorching here and we are walking the paseo.
The bike is running on a steady diet of 98 octain about 95 cents a litre, I think the cheap s--t is about 85 cents.

Ha ha thanks for the comments Mrs Realboss is flattered! Well, we've finally given up the idea of riding back but partly due to BMW here in Faro. I booked in my wife's F650 3 months ago with BMW here on the 28th December after we were forced to abandon it here with me mar and par this summer with waterpump failure. When I dropped it to them they asked when I needed it done, and I said by the 4th Jan latest :thumb2

It turns out they hadnt ordered any of the parts in  and as Spain has its bigger celebration on the 5th Jan, the parts due from Spain only arrived today   The knock on effect was that the weather has been so bad we wouldnt go now anyway. In fairness to BMW Faro we would have probably hit some bad weather anyway, but there you go. They said they dont order parts until the bike is in as they've had people mess them round before. I tried to explain that had I known that I would have paid a deposit as I'd explained back in October to them that we needed the bike done urgently on the 28th ready for us to leave.

Anyway such is life. So, we are now booked to fly this coming Saturday back to old blighty and leave both of our steeds here!!! Am going to post a couple of Optimisers to my dad otherwise when we come back to collect them the batteries'll be dead.

Expect we will come around March once the weather breaks. Only down side is that by then it may be raining a lot

Will keep you all posted and revive this thread then, or start a new one. Hope Pat and Ogni got through ok!

By the way had a fab Christmas and New year weather has been great here few days of rain but otherwise sunny and bright most days :beerjug: :D :D :D
