I’m currently on a 10 day trip from the UK to the Italian lakes. Thought i’d keep a track of day-to-day riding, favourite Roads, scenery etc.

Day 1

A motorway day to get from Home to Bonn for the nights stop over. A fairly uneventful day, leaving home at 3.30am to catch the 6.20am Eurotunnel.

The weather was hot - 25 degrees from 8am, and soon reached 30-32 for teh remainder of the day.

I arrived at my campsite circaa 2pm, and had time to rest for an hour until reception had opened. It was a very busy site, and one where the pitches were crammed in next to each other - tents & motorhomes alike. Akin to some sort of shanty town, but less drugs. The local village had some good options for food, drink and shopping essentials which was useful.

Unfortunately the shanty town people were not those with an awareness of being a PITA when it came to being noisy all night long until the early hours.

Whilst the facilites of the site was good, i’d not stay again due to the cramped pitches & noisy neighbours.

Day 2

Day 2 was the start of riding on good roads and aiming to make my way down to the Austrian/Swiss/Lichtenstien border. As with all things that don’t quite go to plan, the XT &/or MRA track i planned did not quite piece together. So ended up using parts of the route i had planned, and using the ‘adventurous’ routing of the XT’s capability. Lots of good roads were ridden and i certainly found a favourite on the B48, with mile after mile of left, right corners with smooth roads & very little traffic. Being in the shade of the trees and hillside it was noticeably cooler than the 30+ degrees out in the direct sunlight.

My initial stopover for the night was Lindau, but this fell through and i found another campsite in Schluchsee on the B500. Turned out to be a cracking site with plenty of room for camping (for which it was quiet), situated on a beautiful lake & had an onsite restaurant which delivered a good meal at the end of a long day.

Day 3

This was the final day of travel to my ultimate destination for the next 4 days, Lake Maggiore. I planned the route in the morning and decided to traverse Switzerland from North to South, trying to avoid motorways where possible. Whilst i heard of/knew about all the mountain passes i’d not tried to add them to the route, but simply planned it where i saw a road that looked like fun. Low and behold i ended up including the Furka, Gotthard, Guttannen & Grimsel. All of which were great fun to ride and the scenery was spectacular mile after mile. The wether was glorious all day long, sitting at 30 degrees mostly and half that at the mountain top passes.

Finally arrived at my accommodation at 6.30PM, ready for some food and to settle in. I certainly need a more chilled day after 3 x 10 hour days & 1000 miles of riding.

Day 4 (current one)

Rain is the order of the day. I decided to have a break off the Bike today and stay local, get some food in and decide what to do in the coming days. Plus i need to consider my trip back too - plan some routes for a scenic & fun way back up through France.

As regards the campsites you would or wouldn’t use again, it would be kind if you listed them, preferably with links.

Thank you.

Great to see the views, takes me back 25 years!!
More pictures please.

Day 5
I planned a 300 mile loop to Mont Blanc and back, taking in the Simplon pass and scenery of the MAtterhorn, Mont Blanc and other peaks. Riding the Le Cretet up to Orsières was a favourtie of today, as was the Bourdg-Saint-Bernard, which elads up to the stunning ice covered lake seen below.

(Ps i’ll be uploading routes & sites when i get back home)

Simplon Pass

Service/rest stop/sight stop along the pass

Heading up the Bourdg-Saint -Bernard

At Saint-Bernard

Day 6
Today was a loop across to the San-Bernardino pass and the Splügenpass. Riding up the East code of Lake Maggoire on the way, a slow gentle way to start the way.

Road/route 13 (not the Autoroute, the blue version) is a fantastic road and later becomes the San-Bernardino Pass. It’s a brilliant section of road climbing up the Mountainside giving spectacular Vistas of the Mountains on the East. Certainly a favourite of today being a great blend of views & riding road fun.
The Splügenpass is a challenging road at the beginning and at the end too. Starting from the North, the intial switchbacks/hairpin bends are narrow, steep and don’t offer much visbiltiy as you climb. And on the way down, once past the peak the pick up in their gnarliness too - becoming single track roads through narrow bridge sections cut into the mountain just after the Village of Pianazzo. Soon after the peak a countdown sign starts at number 50, and you reach zero by the time you get to the end of the road. So at a guess there’s something like 70 or so, by the time you get to Chiavenna.

Stunning scenery, wow.

Good luck on your continued travels and thanks for taking the time post (y)

We’re heading that way in a few weeks
You’ll not be dissappointed with the scenery and the roads!

I’ll have my routes uploaded probably by the end of next week, so keep an eye out for those For any inspiration.

Have not been to the Alps since 2019, so really looking forward to it. Last year we toured northern Germany, which was ok for a week, but struggled with two weeks. Looking forward to further updates and your routes. We’ll be camping as well.

And just like that 10 days were over. It was a great trip and certainly something i've ticked off my list and will re-visit in the future. It's certainly got me the European bug.

Day 7 i spent resting in the Chalet as it was another hot day, and wanter to prepare my routes back.
Day 8 was Italy > Germany, back through Switzerland and over the passes - nearly the same way i went down the previous week. I stayed at a campsite further up the road in Titisee, which was even more expensive (but not as good) and the local restaurant was some 'boutiqe' place, which turned out to be a way to charge a lot of money for food. It was good, but certainly not 34 euros good for a couple of Salmon Fillets.....
Day 9 was a route from Germany over to near Reims at a Municipal Campsite. Only 11.50 EUR for the night, and there was a good onsite restaurant too. That was the evening meal of some Chicken dish, which was accompanied by some Jazz bacnd that happened to be playing. It turns out a Jazz song lasts longer than a Meatloaf one.
Day 10 was the final leg of the journey from Reims > Channel Tunnel >. Home. Not a very exciting one, some good roads, but no real scenery (well, compared to the rest of the journey anyway). The Chunnel had delays and was late leaving by an hour or so along with probably 100 bikes or so.
So, not many pictures from the past few days except for those from Reims this afternoon. I'll be uploading routes & campsite/accommodation links later on this week.

Accommodation links, prices and mini reviews.

Night 1 -
Camping
Remagen, Germany.

Price 13.50 EUR for 1 person/tent/Bike. Plus 50c for 1 x shower token (4 minutes)

Very cramped site, small pitches, noisy guests during my time. Good local take aways, restaurants and supermarket within walking distance.

Night 2 -
Camping
Schluchsee, Germany

Price 20 EUR for 1 person/tent/Bike

Really nice site, with a view over the lake - and access down to the water edge too.
Free showers, onsite restaurant - the food was good, i had a pork steak, saute potatoes, veg etc - 19.50EUR. limited menu, but all the meals looked very good.

Night 3-7
Chalet
Lake Maggiore, Italy

pre busy season, £200 for 5 nights

Good location with a Petrol station outside the front gates, lots of restaurants along the main road and a mini supermarket within a 5 minute walk. Also not far from the Alps to go exploring the passes.

Night 8
Camping
Titisee, Germany

price 26EUR for 1 night/person/tent

Site was ok. Nothing fancy which justified the price. Shower/toilet blocks was dated, but worked ok. Vending machine onsite for snacks, drinks etc.
Local restaurant was a 'Boutique' hotel place, which was pricey AF. 34EUR for 2 salmon fillets and some veg......they were nice, but not that nice.

Night 9
Camping
Epernay, France

Price 11.50 EUR 1 night/person/tent

As with most French Municipal site, a great local site which is well kept and has good facilities. This one had an attached restaurant next to it which served a good variety of food, at a reasonable price.
